Die vond hij opnieuw in het landelijk leven, na een korte periode waarin hij zich veeleer door thema’s uit de stedelijke omgeving liet inspireren. De mijmerende vrouw – een thema dat nooit geheel uit zijn oeuvre verdween – hernam De Smet in die jaren in werken met een intimistisch karakter, geschilderd in overwegend warme, roodbruine tinten. Naakt met halssnoer is een goed voorbeeld van dit late werk. Er bestaan twee van elkaar enigszins verschillende versies die beide op een vroeg werk uit 1916 teruggaan. À partir de la fin des années 1920, Gustave De Smet abandonne progressivement le langage formel strict qu'il utilisait auparavant pour adopter une approche plus réaliste de ses sujets. Il l'a retrouvé dans la vie rurale, après une courte période où il s'est davantage inspiré des thèmes de l'environnement urbain. La femme rêveuse - un thème qui n'a jamais complètement disparu de son œuvre - De Smet réapparaît dans ces années-là dans des œuvres au caractère intimiste, peintes dans des tons chauds et bruns prédominants. Nu avec collier est un bon exemple de ce travail tardif. Il existe deux versions légèrement différentes, toutes deux remontant à une œuvre ancienne de 1916. From the end of the 1920s, Gustave De Smet gradually abandoned the severe formal idiom he had so far used in favour of a more realistic approach to his subjects. After a short period in which he took his inspiration more from themes of the urban environment, he once again found his subjects in the life of the countryside. In this period, De Smet once again took up the subject of the woman daydreaming, which continued to recur in his oeuvre, in several intimist works painted in largely warm, red-brown tints. Nude with Necklace is a good example of this late work.
