Tijdens deze reis ontmoetten zij de schilder Ardengo Soffici (1879-1964), een kunstenaar en schrijver die nauw verbonden was aan het futurisme en de Parijse avant-garde. Na haar terugkeer vervaardigde Van Thorenburg dit portret van een van Soffici’s dochters, vermoedelijk Laura Soffici. Hoewel de familie Soffici sterk verbonden was met de avant-garde, sluit deze buste meer aan bij de klassieke vormentaal. Het opgestoken haar, bedekt met een sjaal of kapje, de verhoogde kraag en de neerwaartse, ingetogen blik verwijzen duidelijk naar Italiaanse renaissance portretkunst. Les cheveux relevés, recouverts d’un foulard ou d’une coiffe, le col relevé et le regard baissé et modeste renvoient clairement à l’art du portrait de la Renaissance italienne. In 1948, the sculptor Madeleine Van Thorenburg travelled to Italy with former MSK curator Paul Eeckhout (1917–2012). During this trip, they met the painter Ardengo Soffici (1879–1964), an artist and writer closely associated with Futurism and the Parisian avant-garde. Upon her return, Van Thorenburg created this portrait of one of Soffici’s daughters, presumably Laura Soffici. Although the Soffici family was associated with the avant-garde, this bust is more in keeping with the classical style.
