De kunstenaar kiest onderwerpen waarin de mens in affectieve en materiële gebondenheid aan natuur en leven zijn plaats weet. De mythische verering van de boom krijgt heel duidelijk gestalte in Zittend roze naakt. De oorsprong van het gegeven reikt tot in de oertijd. Voor de primitieve mens is de boom de verblijfplaats van geesten of van goden. Bij uitbreiding wordt de boom in archaïsche tijden niet alleen om zichzelf vereerd, maar ook omdat hij de werkzaamheid van een 'totaal andere' kracht vertegenwoordigt, een heilige macht die de mens zowel vereert als vreest. Die kracht manifesteert zich met name in het beeld van de kosmische boom als bron van voortdurende regeneratie. Beeldende voorstellingen van dier en mens, in aanbidding van de boom dateren van voor het tweede millenium voor Christus. Ook in dromen is de boom een vaak voorkomend motief, met een ongekende verscheidenheid aan betekenissen. Hij kan staan voor evolutie, lichamelijke groei of geestelijke rijping, voor opoffering of dood. Van den Berghe brengt tal van variaties op dit oud motief, hier doet de kunstenaar dit door mens en boom vormelijk te vereenzelvigen of minstens die illusie te wekken. Un thème qui revient régulièrement dans l'œuvre tardive de Van den Berghe est celui de la figure humaine en dialogue archétypal avec un arbre ou une grotte. L'artiste choisit des sujets dans lesquels l'homme en lien affectif et matériel avec la nature et la vie connaît sa place. La vénération mythique de l'arbre prend une forme très claire dans Nu rose assis. L'origine du sujet remonte à la préhistoire. Pour l'homme primitif, l'arbre est la demeure des esprits ou des dieux. Par extension, à l'époque archaïque, l'arbre n'est pas seulement vénéré pour lui-même, mais aussi parce qu'il représente l'activité d'une force " totalement différente ", une puissance sainte que l'homme vénère et craint à la fois. Cette puissance se manifeste notamment dans l'image de l'arbre cosmique comme source de régénération constante. Les sculptures d'animaux et d'humains vénérant l'arbre datent d'avant le deuxième millénaire avant Jésus-Christ. L'arbre est également un motif fréquent dans les rêves, avec une variété de significations sans précédent. Il peut représenter l'évolution, la croissance physique ou la maturation spirituelle, le sacrifice ou la mort. Van den Berghe apporte de nombreuses variations à ce vieux motif, ici l'artiste le fait en identifiant formellement l'homme et l'arbre ou du moins en créant l'illusion de celle-ci.
