Onder invloed van zijn oorlogsherinneringen en de naargeestige omgeving ontwikkelde hij daar zijn vroegste expressionistische werken. De haven met vissersboten, de vissers en hun vrouwen vormen in de eerste jaren na de oorlog zijn voornaamste onderwerpen. Het portret van deze zittende visser uit 1921 behoort tot een reeks figuurstudies op groot formaat, uitgevoerd in houtskool op papier, een genre dat Permeke tot op het einde van zijn leven zou beoefenen. Après la première guerre mondiale, Constant Permeke s'est installé à Ostende, dans un quartier de pêcheurs désolé et quelque peu déshérité. Influencé par ses souvenirs de guerre et l'environnement morne, il y développe ses premières œuvres expressionnistes. Dans les premières années de l'après-guerre, le port avec ses bateaux de pêche, les pêcheurs et leurs femmes étaient ses principaux sujets. After the First World War, Constant Permeke settled in a desolate, somewhat destitute fisherman’s quarter in Ostend. Influenced by his wartime memories and these dismal surroundings, he produced his earliest expressionist works. In the years just after the war, his chief subjects were the harbour with its fishing boats, and the fishermen and their wives.
