Hij verbleef in Wales, eerst in Aberystwyth vervolgens in Llanidloes .In Wales kon de kunstenaar geen beeldhouwwerken maken; tijdens zijn ballingschap heeft hij vooral getekend. Uit deze periode worden in het prentenkabinet van het museum 389 tekeningen bewaard. De thema’s beperken zich tot: de jongeling, de wachtende figuur, moeder en kind, de Christusfiguur, met name de eucharistische Christus. De tekeningen werden uitgevoerd in houtskool op papier, uitzonderlijk ook op paneel. Het formaat van de voorstellingen varieert van klein tot meer dan levensgroot. Tijdens de ballingschap in Wales ging George Minne gebukt onder de zorgen om zijn drie zonen die soldaat waren. ‘Wachtende vrouw’ is een tijdloze voorstelling van de wachtende moeder. De tekening wordt gekenmerkt door een nerveuze lijnvoering en toont de ingehouden spanning en angst om het nieuws dat misschien komt. Het thema van het moederschap wordt in de kunst vaak aangegrepen als neerslag van de bezorgdheid van de ouders om hun kinderen. Pendant son exil au Pays de Galles, George Minne doit s'occuper de ses trois fils, qui sont soldats. L’œuvre est une représentation intemporelle de la mère en attente. Le dessin est caractérisé par des lignes nerveuses et montre la tension contenue et l'anxiété face aux nouvelles qui pourraient arriver. Le thème de la maternité est souvent abordé dans l'art comme un reflet de la préoccupation des parents pour leurs enfants.
