Hoewel hij aanvankelijk een schilderscarrière ambieert, wordt het schilderen eerder een ontspannende activiteit tijdens zijn vakanties aan zee, in de Ardennen en in het buitenland. Vandaar ook de kleine formaten van deze landschapschilderingen. Landschap in Zweden is vervaardigd in 1871 wanneer Rops een reis onderneemt naar Scandinavië. Deze schilderijtjes worden gekenmerkt door een losse, vrije factuur en een fris karakter. Het ging Rops in de eerste plaats om de weergave van een indruk waardoor de schriftuur en de kleuren wisselen naargelang de weersomstandigheden, het soort landschap en het zonlicht. Een gelijkaardige, nieuwe opvatting vinden we terug bij de realistische schilders van de Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, een kunstenaarsgroep waarvan ook Rops deel uitmaakte. In de werken van deze kunstenaars primeert de directe, spontane waarneming. Félicien Rops est surtout connu comme un graphiste d'œuvres érotiques. S'il aspirait initialement à une carrière de peintre, la peinture est devenue une activité de détente lors de ses vacances à la mer, dans les Ardennes et à l'étranger. D'où les petits formats de ces peintures de paysages. Paysage en Suède a été peint en 1871 lorsque Rops a entrepris un voyage en Scandinavie. Ces petits tableaux se caractérisent par une facture libre et un caractère frais. Rops s'est surtout intéressé à la reproduction d'une impression, dont l'écriture et les couleurs changent en fonction des conditions météorologiques, du type de paysage et de la lumière du soleil. Une conception nouvelle similaire se retrouve chez les peintres réalistes de la Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, un groupe d'artistes auquel Rops appartenait également. Dans les œuvres de ces artistes, la perception directe et spontanée prévaut. Félicien Rops is best known as a graphic artist of erotic works.
