De geportretteerde wendt haar blik af. Montigny’s typerende ingetogen, kwetsbare houding suggereert zowel bescheidenheid als intense concentratie. Met sterk gestileerd haar, zachte contouren en subtiele schaduweffecten getuigt dit werk van een tot de essentie herleidde eenvoud die zowel intimiteit als sereniteit uitstraalt. Het werk is karakteristiek voor Van Thorenburgs oeuvre dat naast Bijbelse vrouwenfiguren voornamelijk uit bustes van vrouwelijke kunstenaars bestaat. De keuze voor Montigny is betekenisvol in de context van Van Thorenburgs carrière. De Belgische salons zijn op dat moment bij uitstek het podium om als beeldhouwer opdrachten, zichtbaarheid en een positie op de kunstmarkt te verwerven. Door een collega-kunstenaar te portretteren die stilaan naam maakt, toont Van Thorenburg niet alleen haar technische vaardigheid, maar positioneert ze zichzelf ook strategisch binnen het Gentse artistieke netwerk. Madeleine Van Thorenburg fait ses débuts au Salon anversois de 1911 avec ce buste en plâtre de l’artiste Jenny Montigny, qui détourne ici les yeux. L’attitude réservée et fragile qui caractérise Montigny évoque à la fois la modestie et une concentration intense. À travers la chevelure fortement stylisée, la douceur des contours et les ombres délicates, cette œuvre témoigne d’une simplicité ramenée à l’essentiel, qui exprime à la fois l’intimité et la sérénité.
