Een eenvoudige trap tussen twee witgekalkte muren leidt de blik naar een onbestemde, duistere ruimte. Door enkele schaarse verticale lichtaccenten ontstaat binnen het schilderij een tweede rechthoek, parallel aan het beeldvlak. Daarachter gaapt een donker gat. Dit huis biedt geen warmte of geborgenheid, de grauwe kleuren en de sobere, bijna geometrische opbouw versterken het onheilspellend karakter van de ruimte. De klompen, als enige sporen van menselijke aanwezigheid, versterken het onbehaaglijk gevoel van eenzaamheid. De verlaten traphal met enkele desolate objecten in het schemerduister is een motief dat ook terug te vinden is bij de symbolistische kunstenaar Xavier Mellery. Misschien is de desolate sfeer in De Trap ook in verband te brengen met het psychologisch isolement waarin Eugène Laermans zelf verkeerde. Hij kon immers moeilijk met de anderen communiceren sinds hij op zijn elfde doof werd. L'Escalier d'Eugène Laermans (1864-1940), montre de manière presque documentaire la pauvreté et la stérilité d'une maison ouvrière moyenne à la fin du XIXe siècle. Un simple escalier entre deux murs blanchis à la chaux conduit le regard vers un espace indéfinissable et sombre. Quelques rares accents lumineux verticaux créent un deuxième rectangle dans le tableau, parallèle au plan de l'image. Derrière elle, un trou sombre s'ouvre. Cette maison n'offre ni chaleur ni sécurité ; les couleurs ternes et la construction austère, presque géométrique, renforcent le caractère inquiétant de l'espace. Les sabots, qui sont les seules traces de présence humaine, renforcent le sentiment de solitude. La cage d'escalier déserte avec quelques objets désolés dans le crépuscule est un motif que l'on retrouve également dans l'œuvre de l'artiste symboliste Xavier Mellery. L'atmosphère de désolation qui règne dans L'Escalier peut peut-être aussi être mise en relation avec l'isolement psychologique dans lequel s'est trouvé Eugène Laermans. Après tout, il a du mal à communiquer avec les autres depuis qu'il est devenu sourd à l'âge de onze ans.
