Kenschetsend voor zijn oeuvre is de spontane manier van schilderen en de natuurlijke eenvoud in de compositie en in de houdingen van zijn figuren. Naast portretten zijn van hem ook voorstudies voor realistische groepsscènes in de trant van Constantin Meunier bekend, bijvoorbeeld schetsen voor een slavenmarkt of voor steenbakkers aan het werk. Toenemende krankzinnigheid verhinderde Agneessens die op groot formaat uit te voeren. Deze olieverfschets in een sober en warm koloriet geeft een goed beeld van de directe en levendige stijl van de kunstenaar. Edouard Agneessens belongs to a generation of Belgian portrait painters who, around the middle of the nineteenth century, began to distance themselves from academic art.
