Met gesloten en hoekige vormen, donkere aardekleuren en een zware verfmaterie, beeldde hij het boerenleven uit. Expressieve vervormingen en kubistische elementen benadrukken de monumentaliteit van zijn figuren. Permeke maakt ook grote tekeningen, trefzeker en geraffineerd van lijn. Zowel in zijn doeken als in zijn tekeningen experimenteerde hij met de idee van het onvoltooide en paste hij tegelijk verschillende technieken toe, wat bijdraagt tot het spontane en dynamische karakter van zijn werk. Vanaf de late jaren 1930 legde hij zich toe op het tekenen en schilderen van het vrouwelijk naakt, een thema dat hij voorheen slechts sporadisch behandelde. In dezelfde periode begon hij ook te beeldhouwen en vele van zijn tekeningen zijn als het ware studies voor zijn sculpturen waarin hij eveneens bijna uitsluitend het vrouwelijk naakt tot onderwerp nam. Maar Liggend naakt kan onmogelijk gezien worden als een voorstudie; het gaat hier eerder om de uitbeelding van een archetype. Zoals in vele van zijn werken experimenteerde Permeke ook hier met de idee van het onvoltooide wat het tijdloze karakter van de voorstelling benadrukt. Après son retour de Grande-Bretagne après la Première Guerre mondiale, Constant Permeke s'est installé à Ostende et, à partir de 1923, de manière permanente à Jabbeke, un village situé entre Ostende et Bruges. Avec des formes fermées et anguleuses, des couleurs sombres et terreuses et une peinture lourde, il a dépeint la vie paysanne. Des distorsions expressives et des éléments cubistes soulignent la monumentalité de ses figures. Permeke a également réalisé de grands dessins, précis et raffinés au trait. Dans ses peintures et ses dessins, il expérimente l'idée de l'inachevé et applique en même temps diverses techniques, ce qui contribue au caractère spontané et dynamique de son travail. À partir de la fin des années 1930, il se consacre au dessin et à la peinture du nu féminin, un thème qu'il n'avait auparavant abordé que sporadiquement. À la même époque, il commence également à sculpter et nombre de ses dessins sont, en quelque sorte, des études pour ses sculptures, dans lesquelles il utilise presque exclusivement le nu féminin comme sujet. Mais le Nu couché ne peut être considéré comme une étude préliminaire ; il s'agit plutôt de la représentation d'un archétype. Comme dans nombre de ses œuvres, Permeke a également expérimenté ici l'idée de l'inachevé, ce qui souligne le caractère intemporel de la représentation. After his return from Great Britain after the First World War, Constant Permeke settled in Ostend and from 1923 permanently in Jabbeke, a village between Ostend and Bruges. With closed and angular forms, dark earthy colours and a heavy paint material, he depicted peasant life. Expressive distortions and cubist elements emphasise the monumentality of his figures. Permeke also made large drawings, accurate and refined in line. In both his paintings and drawings he experimented with the idea of the unfinished and at the same time applied various techniques, which contributes to the spontaneous and dynamic character of his work. From the late 1930s onward, he devoted himself to drawing and painting the female nude, a theme he had previously dealt with only sporadically. In the same period, he also started to sculpt and many of his drawings are, as it were, studies for his sculptures in which he also almost exclusively used the female nude as subject. But Reclining Nude cannot possibly be seen as a preliminary study; it is rather the depiction of an archetype.
