In die periode koos de kunstenaar voor universele thema’s, waarbij hij voornamelijk de diepmenselijke emotie en expressie in zijn onderwerpen legt. Soms baseerde de kunstenaar zich wel op christelijke thema’s, bijvoorbeeld in Johannes de Doper. De grafische uitwerking en het golvend lijnenspel van dit beeld herinnert aan Biddende non en getuigt van een invloed van de art nouveau. Het beeld is uitgevoerd in gips en arduin, beide in het bezit van het museum. Voor de figuur van Johannes de Doper maakte Minne verschillende voorbereidende studies. Daarin zien we hoe de kunstenaar vanuit de geknielde Johannes de verschillende varianten van geknielde jongelingen ontwikkelt. Avant la Première Guerre mondiale, les thèmes chrétiens n’apparaissent guère dans l’oeuvreœuvre de George Minne. À l’époque, l’artiste leur préférait des thèmes universels où il mettait principalement en avant l’émotion et l’expression profondément humaines de ses sujets. Parfois, l’artiste s’est néanmoins inspiré de thèmes chrétiens, dans Saint Jean-Baptiste par exemple. Le traitement graphique et le jeu ondoyant des lignes de cette sculpture rappellent Oraison et témoignent de l’influence de l’Art nouveau. La sculpture a été exécutée en plâtre et en pierre de taille, les deux versions étant la propriété du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand. Minne a fait plusieurs études préparatoires pour la figure de Saint Jean-Baptiste. Nous y voyons comment, à partir de Jean-Baptiste agenouillé, l’artiste développe plusieurs variantes d’adolescents agenouillés. Before World War I, George Minne hardly explored any Christian themes in his work. Instead the artist preferred more universal themes, mainly emphasising the deeply human emotion and expression in his subjects. At times, the artist did start from Christian themes, e.g., in John the Baptist. The graphic design and the undulations and curves of this sculpture are reminiscent of his Praying Nun and point to the influence of the Art nouveau style. The sculpture exists in a plaster and a blue stone version, which the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent both owns. Minne created several preliminary studies for his sculpture of John the Baptist.
