Al snel integreert de kunstenaar zich in het bruisende kunstleven en vindt hij aansluiting bij progressieve jongeren die de officiële kunst verwerpen en artistieke vrijheid bepleiten. Zijn engagement in het vroege Belgische modernisme vertaalt zich tien jaar later in zijn lidmaatschap van Les XX, maar de kunstenaar sterft enkele dagen voor de opening van de eerste tentoonstelling van de kring. Pantazis is een brugfiguur die in bewondering achterom keek naar het werk van Gustave Courbet, maar in de latere jaren van zijn korte carrière in de ban kwam van het Franse impressionisme waarbij hij zelf zijn invloed deed gelden, onder meer op Guillaume Vogels. Het realisme in het stilleven uit de Gentse verzameling waarin schijnbaar lukraak vruchten in en rond een fruitkorf zijn neergelegd, is typerend voor zijn vroege Belgische jaren en was in 1874 te zien op de Gentse Salon. Il s’intègre rapidement à la vie artistique foisonnante de la ville et se rapproche de jeunes artistes progressistes qui rejettent l’art officiel et revendiquent la liberté artistique. Son engagement dans le modernisme belge naissant se concrétise dix ans plus tard par son adhésion au groupe Les XX, mais l’artiste décède quelques jours avant l’ouverture de la première exposition du cercle. Pantazis est une figure de transition : admiratif du travail de Gustave Courbet, il se laisse gagner, dans les dernières années de sa courte carrière, par l’influence de l’impressionnisme français, exerçant lui-même une influence, notamment sur Guillaume Vogels. Le réalisme de la nature morte issue de la collection gantoise, où des fruits semblent disposés de manière presque fortuite dans et autour d’une corbeille, est caractéristique de ses premières années belges et fut présenté au Salon de Gand en 1874.
