Het schilderij stelt een groep personen voor rond een ‘Man van smarten’. Het basismodel van dit schilderij is de doornenkroning van Caravaggio die bewaard wordt in het Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wenen. Zoals de meeste caravaggisten is Janssens meer schatplichtig aan de visie van Bartolomeo Manfredi op het werk van Caravaggio. De Utrechtse schilders, zoals Dirk van Baburen, namen het model op en hebben droegen bij tot de verspreiding ervan. Ook al inspireert hij zich op deze modellen, toch maakt Janssens hier gebruik van een compacte compositie, wat heel kenmerkend is voor de Italiaanse meesters. De Christus in het midden wordt bespot en mishandeld door personages die echter wel op een zekere afstand van hem blijven. Janssens blijft echter trouw aan de caravaggeske traditie van het lichtspel. De scene lijkt hier verlicht te zijn door een vuurpot die wordt vastgehouden door de adolescent aan de linkerzijde, aan het einde van een lange stok. Deze vuurhaard laat inderdaad het hoofd van de twee beulen aan de rechterzijde oplichten. Niettemin verlicht een andere lichtbron aan de linkerzijde, buiten het paneel, het aangezicht en de romp van Christus. La provenance de cette couronne d'épines, qui n'a été enregistrée dans la collection du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand qu'en 1929, est inconnue. Le tableau représente un groupe de personnes autour d'un "homme de douleur". Le modèle de base de cette peinture est la Couronne d'épines du Caravage, qui est conservée au Kunsthistorisches Museum de Vienne. Comme la plupart des peintres caravagesques, Janssens est davantage redevable à la vision de Bartolomeo Manfredi de l'œuvre du Caravage. Les peintres d'Utrecht, comme Dirk van Baburen, reprennent le modèle et contribuent à sa diffusion. Bien qu'il s'inspire de ces modèles, Janssens utilise ici une composition compacte, très caractéristique des maîtres italiens. Le Christ au centre est moqué et maltraité par des personnages qui, cependant, restent à une certaine distance de lui. Janssens reste cependant fidèle à la tradition caravagesque des jeux de lumière. La scène semble ici éclairée par un brasero tenu par l'adolescent de gauche, au bout d'un long bâton. Ce feu éclaire en effet les têtes des deux bourreaux de droite. Néanmoins, une autre source de lumière sur le côté gauche, à l'extérieur du panneau, éclaire le visage et le torse du Christ. The provenance of this Crown of Thorns, which was only recorded in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent in 1929, is unknown.
