De Gentse kunstenaar behoorde tot de realistische strekking onder de Belgische beeldhouwers die inspiratie vonden bij de Italiaanse renaissancesculptuur en bij Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, een Franse beeldhouwer die in België veel invloed had. In portretten en allegorische figuren, zoals hier bij deze Psyche, combineerde De Vigne een zeker classicisme met een verrassende natuurlijkheid. Het hoofd van het meisje staat lichtjes schuin, de hals is uitgerekt en de huid tot in de details weergegeven. De tegenstelling tussen haar ernstige blik en haar jeugdige leeftijd geeft haar een bijzondere kracht. Het beeld is uitgewerkt in ivoor, een geliefd materiaal bij beeldhouwers op het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Het Grieks ‘psyche’ betekent zowel ‘ziel’ als ‘vlinder’. Vandaar de vlindervleugels op haar rug. In de oudheid verwijst de vlinder naar de dood, in de christelijke traditie naar de opstanding. In relatie met de libel op de sokkel, zinnebeeld van elegantie en lichtheid, maar ook van zonde, wordt hier mogelijks verwezen naar de strijd tussen goed en kwaad. Le musée possède une très belle collection de sculptures de Paul De Vigne. Cet artiste gantois fais partie des sculpteurs belges du mouvement réaliste, qui s’inspirent de la sculpture de la Renaissance italienne ainsi que du sculpteur français Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, un artiste des plus influents en Belgique. Les portraits et personnages allégoriques de De Vigne allient une forme de classicisme à un naturel surprenant, comme l’illustre bien cette Psyche. La tête présente une légère inclinaison, le cou est bien tendu et la peau est rendue jusque dans le moindre détail. Le contraste entre la gravité du regard et la jeunesse de la femme confère une grande force à Psyche. La statue est réalisée en ivoire, un matériau privilégié par les sculpteurs de la fin du 19e siècle. Le mot grec ‘psyche’ signifie à la fois ‘âme’ et ‘papillon’. D’où les ailes de papillon sur son dos. Dans l’antiquité, le papillon représente la mort, dans la tradition chrétienne, la résurrection. En relation avec la libellule sur le socle, symbole d’élégance et de légèreté, mais aussi du péché, la sculpture se réfère probablement à la guerre entre le bien et le mal. The museum has a splendid collection of sculptures by Paul De Vigne. The Ghent born artist belonged to the realistic movement amongst Belgian sculptors, who sought their inspiration in Italian Renaissance sculpture and from the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, who was highly influential in Belgium. In portraits and allegorical figures, De Vigne combined a degree of classicism with a surprising natural quality, as illustrated in Psyche, Greek for both soul and butterfly. The head is slightly askance, the neck outstretched and the skin depicted in great detail. The contrast between the girl’s youthfulness and her serious gaze lends this Psyche a particular intensity. The statue is made of ivory, a favourite material of sculptors at the end of the 19th century. The Greek word ‘psyche’ means both ‘soul’ and ‘butterfly’. Hence the butterfly wings on her back. In antiquity, butterflies were associated with death, but in the Christian tradition with resurrection. In relation to the dragonfly on the plinth, a symbol for elegance and weightlessness, but also for sin, the sculpture might also be a reference to the battle between good and evil. Von Paul De Vigne besitzt das Museum eine umfangreiche Skulpturensammlung (Saal O). Der Genter Künstler gehörte der realistischen Richtung unter den belgischen Bildhauern an, die sich von den italienischen Renaissanceskulpturen und dem französischen Bildhauer Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux inspirieren ließen, einem Künstler, der in Belgien großen Einfluss hatte. In Porträts und allegorischen Figuren kombinierte De Vigne einen gewissen Klassizismus mit einer überraschenden Natürlichkeit, wie Psyche illustriert – griechisch sowohl für Seele als auch für Schmetterling, daher der Schmetterling auf dem Sockel. Der Kopf steht leicht schräg, der Hals ist gestreckt und die Haut bis in alle Details wiedergegeben. Der Gegensatz zwischen dem ernsten Blick und dem jugendlichen Alter des Mädchens verleihen dieser Psyche eine besondere Kraft. Die Skulptur ist in Elfenbein gearbeitet, ein beliebtes Material bei Bildhauern am Ende des 19.
