Het verhaal is geplaatst in een planmatig opgebouwd decor met een opeenvolging van arcades en pilasters in renaissancestijl. De figuren zijn vrij gedrongen en de perspectief, met verschillende doorzichten in een ruïne, is beperkt. Het reliëf is gedateerd 1546 in een cartouche boven de arcade rechts en werd lange tijd toegeschreven aan de beeldhouwer en architect Jacques Dubrœucq, één van de belangrijkste kunstenaars van de renaissance in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. Van de talrijke opdrachten die Dubrœucq uitvoerde, onder meer voor Karel V en Maria van Hongarije, hebben er weinig de tand des tijds doorstaan. Als beeldhouwer had Dubrœucq een voorliefde voor albast. Daarvan zijn in de Sint-Waltrudiskerk in Mons nog voorbeelden te zien. Typerend voor zijn werk zijn de elegantie en dynamiek van zijn figuren en de heldere weergave van de ruimte. Deze kenmerken zijn in De aanbidding door de herders minder aanwezig. Daarom is dit reliëf vermoedelijk het werk van een van zijn leerlingen. Le relief en albâtre L'Adoration des bergers est un exemple du style italianisant qui était populaire aux Pays-Bas au XVIe siècle. L'histoire se déroule dans un cadre planifié avec une succession d'arcades et de pilastres de style Renaissance. Les personnages sont plutôt trapus et la perspective, avec plusieurs vues dans une ruine, est limitée. Le relief est daté de 1546 dans un cartouche situé au-dessus de l'arcade de droite et a longtemps été attribué au sculpteur et architecte Jacques Dubrœucq, l'un des plus importants artistes de la Renaissance des Pays-Bas méridionaux. Parmi les nombreuses commandes que Dubrœucq a réalisées, notamment pour Charles V et Marie de Hongrie, peu ont survécu à l'épreuve du temps. En tant que sculpteur, Dubrœucq avait une prédilection pour l'albâtre. On peut encore en voir des exemples dans l'église Saint-Waltrude de Mons. The alabaster relief of The Adoration of the Shepherds is an example of the Italian style that took root in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century. The story is placed in a systematically arranged setting with a series of Renaissance-style arches and pilasters. The figures are crowded together and the perspective with various views of the ruins is fairly flat.The relief is dated 1546 in a cartouche above the arches on the right and is attributed to one of the most important Renaissance artists in the Southern Netherlands, the sculptor and architect Jacques Dubroeucq.
