Benedictus werd rond 480 in Umbrië geboren en was van adellijke afkomst. Na zijn studies in Rome woonde hij drie jaar als kluizenaar in de eenzaamheid van een grot. Hij stond in hoog aanzien bij de monniken uit de buurt en toen hun abt stierf, werd hij gevraagd om hun overste te worden. Benedictus weigerde lang, maar uiteindelijk stemde hij erin toe. Hij paste de regels heel strikt toe, zodat de monniken zich erover begonnen te beklagen dat ze hem als overste hadden gevraagd, waardoor ze op een dag zijn wijn vergiftigden. Door een mirakel brak de wijnbeker en begreep Benedictus de moordpoging. Hij ging daarna terug als kluizenaar leven en kreeg veel volgers. Dit vormde de basis voor de kloostergemeenschappen, gevormd naar zijn regels. Op deze penning wordt naast Benedictus, de vergiftigde wijnbeker voorgesteld met een slang erboven, de afgebeelde vogel verwijst naar een variatie op de legende, waarbij een raaf een vergiftigd stuk brood (in plaats van wijn) van hem weghaalde.
