Selon une note écrite de la main du conservateur Fritz Van Loo, la toile a été peinte en préparation d'un tableau commémoratif à l'occasion du mariage de M. de Gellinck de Walle avec Mlle de Hemptinne. Il existe également une série d'esquisses préparatoires au crayon (inv. 1922-AG-a à 1922-AG-e) de ce tableau.
