Van Thorenburg beeldt haar hier af als jonge vrouw, sereen en enigmatisch in haar eenvoud. Met een neerwaartse blik, smalle aflopende schouders en het hoofd licht naar voor gebogen is ze aanwezig en toch onbereikbaar. De zachte omtrekcontouren en de egale uitwerking van de huid contrasteren met het sterk gestileerde haar. Subtiele schaduweffecten in de hals, de borst en de ruggengraat, en de licht opgetilde linkerarm zorgen voor dynamiek in een tot de essentie herleid portret. Van deze buste in gepatineerd gips maakte Van Thorenburg aan het einde van haar carrière een bronzen versie, die ze aan het museum schenkt (inv. 1951-AG). L’écrivaine Alice Vlaemingh, qui publie ses écrits sous le nom d’Alice Sauton, est surtout active après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Van Thorenburg la représente ici en jeune femme, sereine et énigmatique dans sa simplicité. Le regard baissé, les épaules tombantes et la tête légèrement penchée vers l’avant, elle est présente et pourtant inaccessible. La douceur des contours et le traitement uniforme de la peau contrastent avec la chevelure fortement stylisée. Les jeux d’ombres délicats dans le cou, sur la poitrine et sur la colonne vertébrale et le léger soulèvement du bras gauche créent du dynamisme dans un portrait réduit à l’essentiel. À la fin de sa carrière, Van Thorenburg a fait une version en bronze de ce buste en plâtre patiné. Elle a ensuite offert le bronze au musée (inv. 1951-AG). The author Alice Vlaemingh, who published under the name Alice Sauton, is particularly active in the period after the Second World War. Van Thorenburg depicts her as a young woman, serene and enigmatic. With a downward gaze, narrow sloping shoulders and her head bowed slightly forward, she seems to be present yet unapproachable. The soft contours and smooth rendering of the skin contrasts with the highly stylised hair. Subtle shadow effects in the neck, chest and spine, and the slightly raised left arm add dynamism to a portrait reduced to its essence.
