De vorst werd in alle delen van het land enthousiast ontvangen. Vele penningen gedenken deze gelegenheid. Als dank voor de hartelijke ontvangst schreef Leopold I een brief aan de burgemeesters en gemeenteraadsleden van alle Belgische steden en gemeenten. Leopold Wiener, hoofdgraveur aan de Munt, werd gevraagd de integrale tekst van deze brief op een medaille te vereeuwigen. En 1856, de grandes festivités ont lieu à l'occasion du vingt-cinquième anniversaire de l'accession au trône du Roi Léopold Ier. De nombreuses médailles commémorent cette occasion. En remerciement de cet accueil chaleureux, Léopold Ier a écrit une lettre aux bourgmestres et conseillers municipaux de toutes les villes belges. Leopold Wiener, graveur en chef à la Monnaie, a été chargé d'immortaliser le texte intégral de cette lettre sur une médaille.
