Als architect werd Jozef Poelaert aangesteld, die koos voor een neogotisch ontwerp. Voor de eerste steenlegging in 1854 werden bronzen en zilveren herinneringspenningen geslagen om het overlijden van de vorstin te herdenken, door middel van een opschrift op de keerzijde. Op de voorzijde staat de nieuwe kerk afgebeeld.
