Na zijn ontmoeting met Giovanni Segantini gaat Martin een tijd lang diens vibrerende streepjestechniek hanteren. Rond 1889 experimenteert hij eveneens met het pointillisme van Georges Seurat. Zijn mystieke geaardheid voert hem uiteindelijk in de richting van het symbolisme. Zo stelt hij op de eerste tentoonstelling van het symbolistisch genootschap La Rose+Croix acht doeken tentoon. Martin is tevens een veel gevraagd muralist en decoreert verscheidene openbare gebouwen in Parijs en in zijn geboortestad Toulouse. Élève de l'École des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse, sous la direction du très célèbre peintre d'histoire de l'époque, Jean-Paul Laurens, Henri Martin (1860-1943) a d'abord peint dans le style des grands maîtres vénitiens. Il reçoit une bourse d'études en Italie et y découvre la sérénité et la palette de couleurs vives des paysages de Giotto. Après avoir rencontré Giovanni Segantini, Martin a commencé à utiliser pendant un certain temps sa technique du trait vibrant. Vers 1889, il expérimente également le pointillisme de Georges Seurat. Sa nature mystique l'a finalement conduit au symbolisme. Il expose huit toiles à la première exposition de la société symboliste La Rose+Croix. Martin était également un muraliste très recherché, décorant plusieurs bâtiments publics à Paris et dans sa ville natale, Toulouse.
