Aan de voorzijde zie je de buste van Louis Cloquet en Stéphane Mortier afgebeeld, aan de keerzijde staan opschriften. In 1887 werd beslist het 18de-eeuwse Pakhuis aan de Korenmarkt af te breken voor de bouw van een nieuwe Nederlandse Schouwburg. Maar het theater kwam er niet en de site kwam in handen van de staat. Minister Van den Peereboom kreeg het complex toegewezen voor de bouw van de “Grote Post”. In 1897 werd het, van staatswege geklasseerde, Pakhuis afgebroken. In 1898 voltooiden Louis Cloquet en Stéphane Mortier hun basisplannen en twee jaar later kon begonnen worden aan de funderingen door de gebroeders Muyncke. In 1902 kon de aannemer Van Driessche met de ruwbouw beginnen en in 1906 kreeg Van Autryve de afwerking toegewezen. In 1908 was het gebouw geheel afgewerkt maar het duurde nog tot oktober 1910 voor de postdiensten naar de Korenmarkt werden overgebracht. Opvallend is de geveldecoratie met zijn allegorische en heraldische uitbeeldingen naast een hele reeks portretten van staatshoofden. Cette médaille, gravée par Hippolyte Le Roy, représente les deux architectes du bâtiment de la poste à Gand, érigé en 1913. Sur l’avers, les bustes de Louis Cloquet et Stéphane Mortier sont représentés, tandis que le revers porte des inscriptions. En 1887, il fut décidé de démolir l’entrepôt du XVIIIe siècle situé sur la Korenmarkt afin d’y construire un nouveau théâtre néerlandais. Cependant, ce projet ne vit jamais le jour, et le site passa entre les mains de l'État. Le ministre Van den Peereboom attribua le terrain à la construction de la "Grande Poste". En 1897, l’entrepôt, alors classé par l’État, fut démoli. En 1898, Louis Cloquet et Stéphane Mortier achevèrent leurs plans de base, et deux ans plus tard, les frères Muyncke commencèrent les travaux de fondation. En 1902, l’entrepreneur Van Driessche entama le gros œuvre, et en 1906, Van Autryve reçut l’attribution des finitions.
