Vanaf het midden van de achttiende eeuw was in Frankrijk de natuur een inspiratiebron geworden voor schilders en schrijvers. Vooral na zijn verhuis naar Barbizon, het leven als boer in dit dorp en het contact met Millet, Rousseau en Diaz de la Peña groeide Jacques liefde voor de natuur en het landelijke leven. Voorstellingen van de boer, zijn werk en van dieren als koeien, varkens, kippen en schapen zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met dit rurale leven. Een motief dat vaak zal terugkeren in de werken van Jacque is de herder en diens kudde schapen, zoals ook aanwezig in Kudde schapen bij maanlicht. Terwijl Brascassat en iets later Toyon hebben gezorgd voor het lanceren van het rund als onderwerp, zo heeft Jacque er voor gezorgd dat het schaap als schilderkunstig motief ingang vond bij de contemporaine kunstenaars. We zien een kudde schapen, geleid door een herder vooraan, bij volle maan door een nachtelijk bos trekken. Typisch voor de meeste Barbizon-kunstenaars is de synthetische behandeling van het motief. Op die manier wordt de nadruk gelegd op het geheel en het zich voortbewegen van een groep. De motieven in dit werk, de herder en zijn kudde, het donkere bos en het maanlicht, brengen bij Jacque gevoelens teweeg die hij wil delen met de beschouwer van zijn werk. Jacques probeert niet alleen een ware, maar ook een poëtische en evotieve voorstelling van het landelijk motief. Daarom blijft het tafereel en de compositie eenvoudig, arm aan detail maar rijk aan evocatie. Jacque s'est senti fortement attiré par le paysage. Un motif qui revient souvent dans les œuvres de Jacque est celui du berger et de son troupeau de moutons, comme c'est le cas dans Un troupeau de moutons au clair de lune. Si Brascassat et, un peu plus tard, Toyon ont lancé le bovin comme sujet, Jacque a fait en sorte que le mouton comme motif pictural soit accepté par les artistes contemporains. On y voit un troupeau de moutons, mené par un berger à l'avant, traversant une forêt nocturne à la pleine lune. Le traitement synthétique du motif est typique de la plupart des artistes de Barbizon. De cette façon, l'accent est mis sur l'ensemble et sur le mouvement d'un groupe. Les motifs de cette œuvre, le berger et son troupeau, la forêt sombre et le clair de lune, évoquent chez Jacque des sentiments qu'il veut partager avec le spectateur de son œuvre. Jacques tente de créer une représentation non seulement vraie, mais aussi poétique et évocatrice du motif rural. C'est pourquoi la scène et la composition restent simples, pauvres en détails mais riches en évocation. Jacque felt strongly attracted to the landscape.
