Beide stukken maakten vroeger deel uit van een albasten retabel. Al tijdens de veertiende eeuw werden de albastgroeven in de Midlands intensief geëxploiteerd. Het belangrijkste centrum voor de productie van beelden en retabels was Nottingham. Vanaf de vijftiende eeuw werd dit precieuze materiaal ook in de rest van Europa meer en meer gebruikt. In de Engelse albasten komt het thema van de Drievuldigheid – God de Vader, de Zoon en de Heilige Geest – vrij vaak voor, ook in verhalende voorstellingen, zoals Het doopsel van Christus en De kroning van Maria. Vader en Zoon kronen Maria met een driedubbele kroon waarop de Heilige Geest in de gedaante van een duif neerdaalt. Het verhaal van de kroning van Maria is ontstaan in de eerste eeuwen van het christendom. In de oorspronkelijke evangelies vinden we het niet terug. De voorstelling van Het doopsel van Christus is gebaseerd op het evangelie van Marcus. God de Vader in de hemel duidt Christus aan als zijn beminde Zoon. Naast Hem was vroeger de Heilige Geest, in de gedaante van een duif, te zien. Stijl en voorstellingswijze van beide reliëfs herinneren aan de Byzantijnse en Romaanse kunst. Les reliefs Le Baptême du Christ et Le Couronnement de la Vierge proviennent d'Angleterre. Les deux pièces faisaient partie d'un retable en albâtre. Au XIVe siècle déjà, les carrières d'albâtre des Midlands étaient exploitées de manière intensive. Le principal centre de production de statues et de retables était Nottingham. À partir du XVe siècle, ce matériau précieux est également de plus en plus utilisé dans le reste de l'Europe. Dans les figures d'albâtre anglaises, le thème de la Trinité - Dieu le Père, le Fils et le Saint-Esprit - apparaît assez fréquemment, également dans les représentations narratives, comme Le Baptême du Christ et Le Couronnement de la Vierge. Le Père et le Fils couronnent Marie d'une triple couronne sur laquelle descend l'Esprit Saint sous la forme d'une colombe. L'histoire du couronnement de Marie trouve son origine dans les premiers siècles du christianisme. Nous ne la trouvons pas dans les évangiles originaux. La représentation du baptême du Christ est basée sur l'évangile de Marc. Dieu le Père céleste désigne le Christ comme son Fils bien-aimé. À côté de lui, le Saint-Esprit, sous la forme d'une colombe, était représenté. Le style et le mode de représentation des deux reliefs rappellent l'art byzantin et roman.
