Het gaat om devotiebeelden en fragmenten van altaarstukken uit kerken en kloosters of kleine religieuze beeldjes bestemd voor privégebruik. De precieze herkomst is meestal onbekend. Een kleine maar exquise groep van vroege beeldhouwwerken in albast behoort tot de kerncollectie. Tussen de 13de en vroege 16de eeuw is Engeland en meer specifiek de streek rond Nottingham, het centrum voor de productie van albasten beelden. Velen onder hen zijn exportproducten. De reliëfs Het Doopsel van Christus en De Kroning van Maria moeten binnen deze context gesitueerd worden. Beide stukken maken oorspronkelijk deel uit van een retabel. Hun stijl en voorstellingswijze herinnert aan kunst uit de Byzantijnse en Romaanse periode. Outre de nombreux exemples de peinture médiévale sur panneau, le MSK Gent possède une belle collection de sculptures médiévales. Il s’agit de statues de dévotion et de fragments de retables provenant d’églises ou de monastères, ou encore de statuettes religieuses destinées à un usage privé. Leur provenance précise n’est en général pas connue. Un petit groupe de sculptures anciennes en albâtre, de facture extrêmement délicate, fait partie du noyau de la collection. Entre le XIIIème et le XVIème siècle, l’Angleterre, en particulier la région de Nottingham, est le centre de production de statues en albâtre qui sont souvent destinées à l’exportation. Les reliefs Le Baptême du Christ et Le Couronnement de la Vierge sont à situer dans ce contexte. Les deux pièces faisaient à l’origine partie d’un retable. Leur style et leur mode de représentation rappellent l’art de la période byzantine et de la période romane. Besides several examples of medieval panel paintings, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent also owns an outstanding collection of medieval sculptures. The museum’s core collection includes this tiny yet exquisite group of early alabaster carvings. The English sculpture industry, mostly of small alabaster carvings, from the region around Nottingham, flourished from the 13th century to the early 16th century.
