Het thema was reeds in de late middeleeuwen erg populair. Onder invloed van de jezuïeten en van de contrareformatie werd aan de traditionele voorstelling een dimensie toegevoegd, zoals hier op het schilderij van Jordaens. Engeltjes vliegen dartelend rond boven de hoofden van Maria, Jozef en Jezus. Eentje biedt Jezus een appel aan, wat verwijst naar zijn toekomstige rol als Verlosser van de erfzonde. Een ander houdt een lauwerkrans boven Jozefs hoofd. Op die manier krijgt de Heilige Familie de betekenis van ‘aardse drie-eenheid’. Het attribuut van Jozef is de bloeiende staf in zijn hand. God liet een dorre stok ontluiken en gaf daarmee aan dat Jozef uitverkoren was om Maria te huwen. De toenemende waardering voor de figuur van Jozef dateert van de zestiende eeuw. De weinige informatie die de evangelies van Matteus en Lucas ons over de figuur van Jozef geven, beperkt zich tot zijn beroep van timmerman. De voorstellingen van Jozef als oude man gaan terug op volksgeloof en apocriefe teksten. Ook hier zien we hem als een vermoeide oude man, bezorgd om het lot van Moeder en Kind. Peint entre 1655 et 1660 et faisant partie de l’œuvre tardif de Jacques Jordaens, Le repos pendant la fuite en Égypte constitue un thème très populaire dès le Moyen-âge tardif. Sous l’influence du jésuitisme et de la Contre-réforme, la représentation traditionnelle acquiert une nouvelle dimension que l’on aperçoit sur cette peinture de Jordaens. Des angelots exubérants décrivent des cercles au-dessus des têtes de Marie, Joseph et Jésus. L’un d’eux tend une pomme à Jésus, renvoyant à son futur rôle de sauveur, celui qui effacera le péché originel. Un autre angelot tient une couronne de laurier au-dessus de la tête de Jésus. Ainsi, la Sainte Famille est désignée comme ‘trinité terrestre’. L’attribut de Joseph est le bâton en fleurs. Dieu fait éclore une branche morte pour signifier à Joseph qu’il est élu comme époux de Marie. La vénération croissante pour le personnage de Joseph remonte au XVIe siècle. Les rares informations que nous donnent les évangiles de Matthieu et de Luc à son sujet ont uniquement trait à son métier de charpentier. Les représentations de Joseph comme vieillard trouvent leur origine dans la croyance populaire et les textes apocryphes. Ici aussi, il nous apparaît sous les traits d’un vieillard las, s’inquiétant du sort de la Mère et de l’Enfant. The Rest during the Flight into Egypt was executed between 1655 and 1660 and is one of Jacques Jordaens’ later works. The theme was already popular in the late Middle Ages. Influenced by the Jesuits and the Counter Reformation, a new dimension was added to the traditional representation, as is evident in Jacques Jordaens’ painting. Cherubs dart through the air above the heads of Mary, Joseph and Jesus. One of them offers Jesus an apple, referring to his future role as the Redeemer of original sin. Another cherub holds a laurel wreath over Joseph’s head. In this way the Holy Family represents an ‘earthly trinity’. Joseph’s attribute is the flowering staff he holds in his hand. God commanded a dry stick to flower, indicating that Joseph had been chosen to be Mary’s husband. The increasing significance of Joseph dates back to the sixteenth century. In the gospels of Matthew and Luke all we are told about Joseph is that he was a carpenter by profession. Representations of Joseph as an old man derive from popular belief and apocryphal texts. Here too we see him as a tired old man who is full of concern about the fate of the Mother and Child. Die Ruhe auf der Flucht nach Ägypten ist zwischen 1655 und 1660 entstanden und gehört zu Jacques Jordaens’ Spätwerk. Das Motiv war bereits im späten Mittelalter sehr beliebt. Unter dem Einfluss der Jesuiten und der Gegenreformation wurde der traditionellen Darstellung eine Dimension hinzugefügt, so wie auch hier bei Jordaens’ Gemälde: Engel fliegen munter über den Häuptern von Maria, Joseph und Jesus. Einer bietet Jesus einen Apfel an, was auf seine zukünftige Rolle als Erlöser von der Erbsünde verweist. Ein anderer hält einen Lorbeerkranz über Josephs Kopf. Auf diese Weise kommt der Heiligen Familie die Bedeutung einer “irdischen Dreifaltigkeit” zu. Das Attribut Josephs ist der blühende Stab in seiner Hand. Gott ließ einen verdorrten Stab erblühen, um zu zeigen, dass Joseph auserkoren war, Maria zu heiraten. Die Figur des Joseph genoss seit dem 16. Jahrhundert zunehmende Würdigung. Die spärlichen Informationen, die die Evangelisten Matthäus und Lukas über Joseph geben, beschränken sich auf den Hinweis, dass er Zimmermann war. Dass Joseph als alter Mann dargestellt wird, geht auf Volksglauben und apokryphe Texte zurück.
