Stilistisch behoort het werk tot de officiële richting in de Venetiaanse portretschilderkunst, waarbij de figuren tegen een donkere achtergrond worden voorgesteld. Het werk is van de hand van de Venetiaan Jacopo Robusti, genaamd Il Tintoretto. Het portret kwam tot stand in de bloeiperiode van de kunstenaar. De hier geportretteerde was een kenner van de antieke cultuur en behoorde tot de gezaghebbende Venetiaanse familie Cornaro, waarvan verscheidene leden bekendheid genoten als humanist en kunstenaar. Tintoretto beeldde Cornaro af ten halven lijve, met de linkerhand op het hoofd van een vrouwenbeeld, een veelzeggende verwijzing naar de culturele achtergrond van het personage. L’œuvre est de la main du Vénitien Jacopo Robusti, dit Le Tintoret. Le portrait fut réalisé dans la période de plein essor de l’artiste. Le personnage portraituré ici était un connaisseur de la culture antique et appartenait à la famille Cornaro, qui faisait autorité à Venise et dont plusieurs membres ont été réputés comme humanistes et artistes. The Portrait of humanist Giovanni Paolo Cornaro, at the age of thirty-two, dates from 1561 and is a perfect example of a status portrait. Stylistically speaking this work belongs to the official style of Venetian portrait painting, whereby the figures are always represented against a dark background. The work was painted by Venetian artist Jacopo Robusti, also known as Il Tintoretto. The portrait was painted during the artist’s heyday. The person portrayed here was a connoisseur of antique culture and a member of the prominent Venetian Cornaro family. Several of its members were renowned humanists and artists. Tintoretto portrayed Cornaro in a half-figure portrait, with his left hand on the head of a sculpture of a woman, a broad reference to the character’s cultural background.
