Er zijn bijna vierduizend prenten van hem bekend. Daarin hekelde hij de bourgeoisie van zijn tijd of bekeek hij de verdrukten van de maatschappij met milde spot. Schilderen met olieverf ervoer Daumier als tijdrovend en vele van zijn schilderijen bleven onafgewerkt. Tot zijn geliefkoosde onderwerpen behoren taferelen uit het dagelijkse leven en portretten van kunstenaars en advocaten. Ook Verzamelaars van prenten is een thema dat Daumier meermaals behandelde. De Gentse studie wordt gesitueerd omstreeks 1870-1873, een periode waarin de kunstenaar een vluchtige penseelvoering en theatrale lichteffecten hanteerde. De aandacht ging naar de expressieve houding van de liefhebbers. Honoré Daumier est surtout connu comme dessinateur et lithographe. On lui connaît près de quatre mille illustrations. Pour Daumier, la peinture à l’huile prenait trop de temps et nombre de ses tableaux sont restés inachevés. Les scènes de la vie quotidienne et les portraits d’artistes et d’avocats comptent parmi ses sujets favoris. Les Collectionneurs d’images sont aussi un thème traité par Daumier à plusieurs reprises. L’étude gantoise se situe vers 1870-1873, période où l’artiste maniait le pinceau avec superficialité et utilisait des effets de lumière théâtraux. Il portait son attention sur l’attitude expressive des amateurs. Honoré Daumier is mainly known as a draughtsman and lithographer. There are almost four thousand known prints by this artist. In his prints Daumier criticized the bourgeoisie of his era or poked gentle fun at the lower social classes. Daumier felt that oils were a time-consuming way of painting; thus many of his paintings remained unfinished. His favourite subjects include scenes from daily life and portraits of artists and lawyers. Daumier also enjoyed the theme of Prints collectors, a theme which he covered repeatedly. The Ghent study is dated approximately around 1870-1873, a period during which the artist preferred airy brush strokes and theatrical light effects. His attention was mainly drawn to the expressive posture of the art lovers. Honoré Daumier ist vor allem als Zeichner und Lithograf von fast viertausend Bildern bekannt. In seinen Werken prangerte er die Bourgeoisie seiner Zeit an oder widmete er sich den Unterdrückten der Gesellschaft mit mildem Spott. Malen mit Ölfarbe empfand Daumier als zeitraubend und viele seiner Gemälde wurden nicht vollendet. Zu seinen Lieblingsthemen gehören Szenen aus dem Alltag sowie Porträts von Künstlern und Anwälten. Auch Sammler von Bildern ist ein Thema, das Daumier mehrmals behandelte. Die Genter Studie stammt aus den Jahren 1870-1873, einem Zeitraum, in dem der Künstler eine flüchtige Pinselführung und theatralische Lichteffekte anwendete.
