Bij dat water ligt een bundeltje stro, een gebroken aardewerken kruik en wat mosselschelpen. Het licht komt van links en accentueert de borstpartij van de haan. Mosselen waren het voedsel van de allerarmsten. De schelpen werden voor kippen gebruikt als aanvullende voedingstof voor kalk. De voorstelling brengt echter nog een andere boodschap. Sinds de oudheid stonden oesters bekend als afrodisiacum; de haan was een symbool van mannelijkheid, heerszucht en potentie. Ici, trois poules et un coq sont blottis au bord d’une mare, où reposent un faisceau de paille, des tessons d’argile et des coquilles de moule. La lumière provient de la gauche, rehaussant la poitrine du coq. À l’époque, les moules sont la nourriture des pauvres et leurs coquilles, riches du calcium, sont données aux poulets comme supplément nutritif. Ce tableau livre cependant un message tout autre. De temps immémoriaux, les mollusques sont considérés comme un aphrodisiaque et le coq symbolise la masculinité, la soif du pouvoir et la virilité. In this painting, three hens and a rooster flock together at the edge of a pond. A bundle of straw, a broken clay jar and some mussel shells lie at the water’s edge. The light falls from the left and highlights the rooster’s breast. Mussels were the food of the poor. The shells, which contain calcium, were given to chickens as a supplementary source of nutrients. This paintings, however, conveys another message.
