Ze werd geopend door Leopold II op 5 mei. Het werd een groot succes met als hoogtepunt de reconstructie van "Oud Antwerpen" gerealiseerd door schilder Van Kuyck en architect Eugène Geefs. Dit idee zou later ook in Brussel en in Gent hernomen worden. Zoals gebruikelijk werden heel wat penningen uitgegeven om de tentoonstelling te vereeuwigen. De officiële herdenkingspenning werd bij Michaux besteld en werd, naargelang de vraag, tot driemaal per week in de tentoonstellingsgebouwen zelf geslagen. Op de voorzijde de beeltenis van koning Leopold II, op de keerzijde een wereldbol die boven de tentoonstellingsgebouwen zweeft en het wapenschild van Antwerpen. La médaille commémorative officielle a été commandée à Michaux et, selon la demande, elle a été frappée jusqu'à trois fois par semaine dans les bâtiments mêmes de l'exposition. Sur l'avers figure l'effigie du roi Léopold II, sur le revers un globe terrestre flottant au-dessus des bâtiments de l'exposition et les armoiries d'Anvers.
