Hij portretteerde verscheidene beroemde Schotse persoonlijkheden zoals Sir Walter Scott, James Hutton en David Hume. Daarnaast bracht hij ook minder bekende personen in beeld. Een van hen is Alexander Edgar, misschien verwant aan Ann Edgar, Henry’s vrouw. Edgar is geportretteerd ten halve lijve en in vooraanzicht. Het hoofd en de witte kraag lichten op tegen de donkere achtergrond en de nauwelijks gedetailleerde mantel. Die manier van portretteren ontstond in het begin van de negentiende eeuw in Engeland en kreeg ook op het vasteland veel navolging. Het portret geeft een goed beeld van de levendige stijl van Raeburn. Met enkele brede en trefzekere penseelstreken wist de kunstenaar de fysionomie en de persoonlijkheid van zijn model weer te geven. Henry Raeburn faisait partie du groupe d’intellectuels et d’artistes qui donna ses lettres de noblesse à la culture en Ecosse. Il peignit des portraits d’éminentes personnalités écossaises, telles que Sir Walter Scott, James Hutton et David Hume. Il portraitura également des personnes moins célèbres, dont Alexander Edgar, qui était peut-être parent de Ann Edgar, l’épouse de l’artiste. Le portrait d’Edgar est un torse de face. La tête et le jabot blanc contrastent avec l’obscurité de l’arrière-fond et le rendu peu détaillé de la redingote. Ce type de portrait fut peint pour la première fois en Angleterre au début du XIXe siècle et fut largement imité sur le continent. Le portrait rend très bien le style vivant de Raeburn. Avec un pinceau à la fois généreux et précis, l’artiste parvient à reproduire la physionomie et la personnalité de son modèle. He painted portraits of a variety of famous Scottish personalities including Sir Walter Scott, James Hutton and David Hume. He also portrayed lesser-known people, one of them being Alexander Edgar, possibly a relative of Henry’s wife Ann Edgar.This is a frontal bust portrait in which the head and white collar stand out brightly against the dark background and the barely detailed coat. This approach to portraiture arose in England in the early nineteenth century and was also much imitated on the Continent. This portrait gives a good impression of Raeburn’s lively style.
