Links bevinden zich twee opeengestapelde koperen schalen van een weegschaal. In het midden onderaan is een gedeelte van een mes te zien dat daar zo voor het grijpen ligt. De vishandelaar is opgehouden met het schoonmaken van de vis en heeft het kraam even verlaten. Alhoewel deze schilderijen realistische weergaven van visbanken lijken (‘naer het leven’), is dat toch niet het geval. Ongetwijfeld heeft Van Beijeren in een tekenboekje ter plekke schetsen gemaakt die hij in het atelier uitwerkte. Dergelijke schilderijen waren bestemd voor de keuken van een burgerwoning Un assortiment de fruits de mer est repose sur l’étal d’un poissonnier.
