Met een zelfportret als dit, etaleert Emma De Vigne haar bekwaamheid in de realistische weergave maar ook in het doorgronden van de persoonlijkheid van de geportretteerde. Haar blik verraadt een ingetogen vastberadenheid. Emma De Vigne ne se dépeint pas ici en tant qu’artiste, mais en tant que femme de la bourgeoisie nantie. Issue d’une famille d’artistes gantois talentueux, elle consacre surtout sa brève existence à la peinture de natures mortes de fleurs. À partir de 1890, elle pratique aussi l’art du portrait. Avec un autoportrait comme celui-ci, Emma De Vigne fait étalage de son habileté à rendre un sujet avec réalisme, mais aussi à percer la personnalité de la personne dont elle fait le portrait. As a descendant of the talented De Vigne family from Ghent, she devoted her short life mainly to painting flower still lifes. From 1890 onwards, she also focuses on portraiture.
