Zijn oeuvre munt uit door nauwkeurige observatie, delicate penseelvoering en verfijnde kleurharmonieën. Seghers was een leerling van Jan Brueghel de Oudere, zelf een vermaard bloemenschilder en uitvinder van de bloemenkrans rond een stenen cartouche. In de cartouche zien we vaak een afbeelding van heiligen, meestal uitgevoerd door andere schilders. Seghers werkte dit motief verder uit. De bloemenkransen of -guirlandes zijn dikwijls samengesteld uit meerdere boeketten met hoofdzakelijk Mariabloemen, samengevoegd ongeacht hun bloeitijd. De keuze van de bloemen hing vaak samen met de afgebeelde heilige. In dit werk is er geen voorstelling in de cartouche geschilderd. De signatuur van Daniël Seghers zien we onderaan links. Daniël Seghers, Jésuite anversois, est un spécialiste de la peinture florale. Aussi son œuvre excelle-t-il par l’observation scrupuleuse, un pinceau délicat et une palette harmonieuse et raffinée. Seghers est un élève de Jan Bruegel l’Ancien, lui-même illustre peintre floral et inventeur de la couronne de fleurs inscrite autour d’un cartouche de pierre. Le cartouche représente souvent des saints, peints généralement par d’autres peintres. Seghers développe ce motif. Les couronnes ou guirlandes de fleurs sont souvent constituées de plusieurs bouquets composés essentiellement de lys et regroupés indépendamment des saisons de floraison respectives. Le choix des fleurs est souvent déterminé par le saint illustré. Dans cette œuvre, aucune représentation n’est peinte sur le cartouche. On aperçoit la signature de Daniël Seghers dans le coin inférieur gauche. Daniel Seghers was a Jesuit from Antwerp who specialised in painting flowers. His work as a whole is striking for his accurate observation, delicate brushwork and use of refined, harmonious colours. Seghers was a pupil of Jan Brueghel the Elder who was also a renowned painter of flowers and the inventor of the flower wreath around a stone cartouche. In the cartouche we often see a depiction of saints, usually executed by other painters. Seghers developed this motif even further. The flower wreaths, or garlands, often comprise numerous bouquets made up largely of marguerites and are put together irrespective of when they flower. The choice of flowers often depended on the saint portrayed. In this work, nothing has been painted in the cartouche.
