Onder de weinige werken die van deze vroeg-gestorven beeldhouwer bekend zijn, is deze monumentale voorstelling van de onfortuinlijke, geketende figuur zonder twijfel het hoofdwerk. Het werd tentoongesteld op de Brusselse salon van 1845 onder de welluidende titel “Prometheus op de Kaukasus blootgesteld ten einde te worden verscheurd door de gieren”, een onderwerp dat perfect aansloot bij de toen geldende hang naar sprekende thema’s uit de klassieke mythologie. Bouré maakte het beeld na een lang verblijf in Florence, waar hij de meesters van de renaissance-beeldhouwkunst ontdekt had, een invloed die in de grote expressiviteit, de gezochte houding en de opvallende musculatuur van de liggende figuur tot uiting komt. Elle a été exposée au Salon de Bruxelles en 1845 sous le titre euphonique de "Prométhée sur le Caucase exposé à être déchiré par les vautours", un sujet qui correspondait parfaitement à la préférence alors dominante pour les thèmes expressifs de la mythologie classique. Bouré a réalisé cette sculpture après un long séjour à Florence, où il avait découvert les maîtres de la sculpture de la Renaissance, une influence qui s'exprime dans la grande expressivité, la pose recherchée et la musculature saisissante de la figure allongée.
