Haar verhaal werd verteld in de Legenda Aurea, een verzameling heiligenlevens die ook voor dit schilderij de leidraad was. Apollonia weigerde op het aansporen van een Romeinse priester, de man rechts, te bidden voor het beeld van een heidense god, links bovenaan. Haar straf was gruwelijk. Een beul, de man in het blote bovenlijf, trok al haar tanden uit. Omwille hiervan werd Apollonia patroonheilige tegen tandpijn. Vervolgens dreigden ze haar op de brandstapel te gooien als ze niet bad voor het beeld. Apollonia bleef trouw aan Christus en koos zonder vrees voor de brandstapel. Een hemels licht valt op haar. Bovenaan zien we dat Maria klaarstaat met een krans en een palmtak, de beloning voor haar martelaarschap. Dit altaarstuk werd gemaakt voor de Augustijnenkerk in Antwerpen. Het was een van de vele opdrachten die kaderden binnen de Contra Reformatie. Tijdens de voorgaande eeuw bloeide het protestantisme hevig in de Scheldestad, wat uitmondde in de Beeldenstorm en een bloederig conflict. Toen het Katholieke Spanje Antwerpen in 1585 opnieuw veroverde, gaven de overheden de opdracht om de kerken terug te vullen met kunst. De geschiedenis van de Antwerpse Augustijnen tijdens de Godsdiensttroebelen is merkwaardig. Maarten Luther was een Augustijn, waardoor de ordebroeders aanvankelijk sympathie toonden voor de Reformatie. Dit kwam hen duur te staan. De Augustijnen werden op bevel van Karel V verbannen en hun diensten werden stopgezet. In 1608 verkregen de Augustijnen door bemiddeling van Aartshertogen Albrecht en Isabella toestemming om een nieuw klooster te stichten in Antwerpen. De orde zwoor nu resoluut trouw aan het Rooms Katholicisme. Tussen 1615 en 1618 bouwden de Augustijnen een nieuwe kerk in de Kammenstraat. In 1628 werden drie altaarstukken voor deze kerk besteld. Voor het hoofdaltaar leverde Peter Paul Rubens de Madonna met Heiligen. Op de zijaltaren prijkten Jordaens’ Apollonia en de Heilige Augustinus van Hippo door Anthony Van Dyck. De onderwerpen van deze altaarstukken hadden een speciale betekenis voor de Augustijnen. Augustinus van Hippo was de stichter van het orde en in de kerk werden relieken van Apollonia bewaard. Rubens beeldde op het centrale luik Maria en een meute heiligen af omdat de Augustijnenkerk aan Maria en alle heiligen was toegewijd. De twee heiligen die de hoofdrol spelen op de zijaltaren keren terug in het hoofdaltaar: Apollonia staat links met een tang in de hand en Augustinus voorin met een brandend hart. Augustinus en Apollonia staan symbool voor de twee manieren om heilig te worden, respectievelijk monastieke devotie en martelaarschap. De keuze voor de drie kunstenaars is opvallend. Ze waren de grootheden van hun tijd, en de jongere schilders van de twee zijaltaren werkten voordien bij de schilder van het hoofdaltaar. Jordaens bereidde dit monumentale werk efficiënt voor. Hij maakte een modello in gouache, thans bewaard in het prentenkabinet van de stad Antwerpen. Voor sommige details maakte hij studies naar het leven. Mogelijk bouwde hij op ideeën van Rubens. Eerder werd voorgesteld dat Rubens de opdracht aanvankelijk helemaal zelf wilde schilderen, maar dat hij omwille van een diplomatieke reis naar Spanje (1628) de zijaltaren aan zijn twee voormalige medewerkers doorgaf. Apolline, une sainte chrétienne, morte en martyr en 214, est agenouillée au centre. Son histoire est racontée dans les Legenda Aurea, un recueil sur la vie des saints qui constitue le fil conducteur de ce tableau. Apolline refuse l’injonction d’un prêtre romain, l’homme à droite, de prier devant l’image d’un dieu païen, représenté en haut à gauche. Son châtiment est terrible. Un bourreau, l’homme au torse nu, lui a déjà arraché toutes les dents. C’est pour cet acte barbare qu’Apolline devient la sainte patronne des dentistes. On a la menace ensuite de la jeter sur le bûcher si elle ne s’incline pas devant l’image païenne. Apolline reste fidèle au Christ et choisit sans crainte de se jeter dans les flammes. Une lumière céleste tombe sur elle. Marie, en haut, se tient prête avec une couronne et une branche de palmier, la récompense pour son martyre. Ce retable a été réalisé pour l’église Saint-Augustin d’Anvers. C’est une des nombreuses commandes dans le cadre de la Contre-Réforme. Au siècle précédent, le Protestantisme a exercé sur la cité scaldienne une domination qui débouche sur un sanglant conflit et l’Iconoclastie. Lorsque l’Espagne catholique reconquiert Anvers en 1585, les autorités commandent de remeubler les églises d’objets d’art religieux. L’histoire des Augustins anversois pendant les troubles religieux est remarquable. Martin Luther étant un Augustin, les membres de la confrérie montrent initialement une certaine sympathie pour la Réforme. Mal leur en coûte. Les Augustins sont bannis sur ordre de Charles Quint et leurs offices cessent. Ils obtiennent en 1608 par l’entremise des Archiducs Albert et Isabelle l’autorisation de fonder un nouveau monastère à Anvers. L’ordre jure alors fidélité absolue à l’Église Catholique. Entre 1615 et 1618, les Augustins construisent une église à la Kammenstraat. En 1628, trois retables sont commandés pour ce nouvel lieu de culte. Pierre Paul Rubens livre la Madone entourée de saints pour le maître-autel. L’Apolline de Jordaens et le Saint Augustin d’Hippone d’Antoine Van Dyck sont suspendus au-dessus des autels latéraux. Les thèmes de ces retables ont une signification particulière pour les Augustins. Augustin d’Hippone est le fondateur de l’ordre et l’église renferme des reliques d’Apolline. Sur le volet central de son retable, Rubens représente Marie entourée d’une quantité de saints car l’église des Augustins est consacrée à la Vierge et à tous les saints. Les deux saints dans le rôle principal sur les retables latéraux sont repris sur celui du maître-autel : Apolline à gauche avec une pince à la main et Augustin au premier plan avec un cœur en feu. Augustin et Apolline incarnent les deux manières d’atteindre la sainteté, respectivement par la dévotion monastique et le martyr. Le choix des trois peintres mérite d’être souligné. Ce sont les plus illustres artistes de leur temps et les jeunes peintres des deux autels latéraux ont travaillé dans l’atelier du peintre du maître-autel. Jordaens prépare minutieusement cette œuvre monumentale. Il réalise un modello à la gouache, aujourd’hui conservé au Cabinet des Estampes de la Ville d’Anvers. Il fait pour certains détails des études sur modèle vivant. Il élabore sans doute sur les conceptions de Rubens. Il a été suggéré que Rubens voulait prendre à son compte toute la commande, mais qu’un voyage diplomatique en Espagne (1628) l’obligea à confier les retables latéraux à ses deux anciens collaborateurs. Kneeling to the right of centre is Apollonia, a saint who was martyred in the year 214. Her story is told in the Legenda aurea (Golden legend), a collection of saints’ lives that was also used as the guide for this painting. Apollonia rejected the urging of a Roman priest, the man on the right, to pray before the image of a heathen god, seen at top left. Her punishment was gruesome. An executioner, the man nude to the waist, pulled out all her teeth, which is why Apollonia is the patron saint invoked against toothache. He then threatened to throw her on a pile of wood if she refused to pray before the image. She, however, remained true to Christ and chose fearlessly to be burned alive. A heavenly light descends upon her. At the top the Virgin Mary is awaiting her with a wreath and a palm frond, the reward for her martyr’s death. This altarpiece was made for the Augustinian church in Antwerp. It was one of the many commissions that took place within the context of the Counter-Reformation. Protestantism had flourished in the city in the previous century, unleashing the Iconoclasm and a bloody religious conflict. When Catholic Spain recaptured Antwerp in 1585 the authorities ordered that the churches be filled with art once again. The history of the Antwerp Augustinians during the religious troubles is an unusual one. Martin Luther was an Augustinian monk, so the brothers of his order were initially sympathetic to the Reformation, but they paid a heavy price for it. They were banished on the orders of Emperor Charles V and their services prohibited. In 1608, through the mediation of Archdukes Albrecht and Isabella, they were given permission to found a new monastery in Antwerp, and from now on the order resolutely swore loyalty to the Church of Rome. Between 1615 and 1618 the Augustinians built a new church in Kammenstraat, and in 1628 three altarpieces were ordered for it. Peter Paul Rubens delivered a Madonna and saints for the high altar, while side altars received Jordaens’s Apollonia and St Augustine of Hippo by Anthony van Dyck. The subjects of those altarpieces had a special significance for the Augustinians. St Augustine of Hippo was the founder of the order, and relics of Apollonia were kept in the church. Rubens depicted the Virgin and a crowd of saints in the centre of his altarpiece, because the church was dedicated to the Virgin and all saints. The two saints singled out on the side altars reappear on the high altar, Apollonia standing on the left holding tongs and Augustine in the foreground with a fiery heart. The pair of them symbolise the two paths to sainthood: monastic devotion and martyrdom. The choice of the three artists was striking. They were the great masters of their age, and the younger ones who were selected for the side altars had previously worked for the painter of the high altarpiece. Jordaens was efficient in his preparation for this monumental work. He made a modello in gouache that is now in the printroom of the City of Antwerp. He made life studies for some of the details, and may have borrowed some ideas from Rubens.
