De eerste twee stellen samen de annunciatie voor. De engel Gabriël (inv.nr. 257) meldt aan de tronende en verbaasde Maria (inv.nr. 258) dat ze zwanger zal worden. De andere twee scènes komen uit het passieverhaal: De kruisiging (inv.nr. 259) en De kruisafneming (inv.nr. 260). Het eerste paneel toont Christus aan het kruis geflankeerd door twee engelen. Links voorin treuren zijn naasten, rechts staat een meute Romeinse soldaten met vlaggen. Achterin doorboort Longinus – volgens de overlevering een blinde soldaat – Christus’ zij met een lans. Het bloed uit de wonde geneest hem. In het volgende tafereel wordt Christus’ dode lichaam van het kruis gehaald. Opnieuw reageren zijn naasten emotioneel. Christus’ bloed vloeit naar de schedel van Adam onderaan. Volgens de traditie was die begraven op de plaats waar Christus de mensheid verloste van Adams erfzonde. De annunciatie en de passie houden verband met elkaar omdat ze beide handelen over de menswording van Christus. Naast de schedel op De kruisafneming knielt een opvallend kleinere, biddende man in een bisschoppelijk gewaad. Dit is de opdrachtgever van de polyptiek, hoogstwaarschijnlijk Napoleone Orsini, een telg uit een invloedrijk adellijk geslacht. Hij studeerde en werkte in verschillende Europese steden en verbleef als kardinaal aan het pauselijk hof in Avignon. Volgens de overlevering bezat Orsini een nagel van Christus’ kruis, die hij naliet aan de kerk Santa Maria degli Angeli in Firenze. Dit verklaart mogelijk de prominente positie van de nagels in De kruisafneming én de plaats van de opdrachtgever. Normaal werd een biddende patroon afgebeeld bij De kruisiging. Orsini werd waarschijnlijk beïnvloed door de ideeën van de diepgelovige franciscaan Ubertino van Casale, die bij hem in dienst was. Volgens Ubertino hadden de passiewerktuigen, zoals de lans van Longinus en de nagels van het kruis, spirituele kracht. Oorspronkelijk ging het hier om twee paneeltjes die aan beide kanten beschilderd waren: Gabriël achteraan op De kruisiging, en Maria achteraan op De kruisafneming. Ze werden doormidden gezaagd om ze aan een muur te presenteren. We kennen nóg twee paneeltjes die tot de polyptiek behoorden. In Parijs bevindt zich een voorstelling van De kruisdraging, met op de achterzijde het wapenschild van de familie Orsini. In Berlijn wordt De graflegging bewaard, die ooit waarschijnlijk ook aan de achterkant met een wapen beschilderd was. De twee schilderijtjes dienden als vleugels voor de twee Antwerpse panelen. In open toestand toonde de polyptiek vier opeenvolgende episodes uit de passie: de kruisdraging, de lanssteek, de kruisafneming en de graflegging. Op de achterkant stond centraal De annunciatie, geflankeerd door de wapens van de Orsini’s. Het geheel kon worden gesloten en omgedraaid: dan zag je een tweeluik met De annunciatie. Het kleine formaat en de tweezijdige beschildering suggereren dat de Orsini Polyptiek diende voor privédevotie. Er bestaan nog andere voorbeelden van dit type vouwbare werkjes, maar ze waren eerder zeldzaam. . Schilder Simone Martini, een pionier van de Italiaanse renaissance, was afkomstig uit Siena en verbleef lange tijd in Avignon. Hij signeerde het werk onderaan op de lijst. Op de Antwerpse paneeltjes staat ‘PINXIT’ en ‘SYMONE’. Op De kruisdraging in Parijs stond oorspronkelijk ‘HOC OPUS’. Samen betekent dat: ‘Simone [Martini] heeft dit werk geschilderd’. Waarschijnlijk stond er bij De graflegging een datum op de lijst, maar die is verdwenen. Door dit ontbrekende puzzelstuk is er onenigheid over de ontstaansdatum. Volgens sommigen werd dit werk geschilderd tijdens het verblijf van Martini en Orsini aan het pauselijk hof in Avignon: tussen 1335 (aankomst van Martini) en 1342 (dood van Orsini). Volgens Petrarca schilderde Martini toen ook een portret van Orsini. Volgens anderen sluit de stijl duidelijk aan bij Martini’s werk uit de jaren 1320-1330. De Orsini Polyptiek bevond zich al vroeg in Frankrijk, waar het werk grote invloed uitoefende op laatmiddeleeuwse boekverluchters, zoals de gebroeders Van Limburg. Zij verwerkten motieven uit de Orsini Polyptiek in hun Kruisdraging en Kruisafneming in Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. Le KMSKA possède quatre petits panneaux du Polyptique Orsini. Les deux premiers représentent ensemble l’Annonciation. L’ange Gabriel (n° d’inv. 257) annonce à Marie (n° d’inv. 258) qu’elle va être mère. Les deux autres scènes sont issues de la Passion : La Crucifixion (n° d’inv. 259) et La Descente de Croix (n° d’inv. 260). Le premier panneau montre le Christ sur la Croix flanqué de deux anges. Ses proches sont en pleurs au premier plan à gauche, à droite se tient une troupe de soldats romains avec des étendards. A l’arrière, Longinus – un soldat aveugle selon la tradition – transperce le flanc du Christ de sa lance. Le sang coulant de la plaie lui rend la vue. Sur la scène suivante, la dépouille du Christ est descendue de la croix. Ses proches réagissent là aussi avec émotion. Le sang du Christ s’écoule jusqu’au crâne d’Adam en bas. Selon la tradition, il est enterré à l’endroit même où le Christ délivre l’Humanité du péché originel. L’Annonciation et la Passion sont liées car elles traitent l’une et l’autre de l’incarnation du Christ. Sur La Descente de Croix, un homme de taille nettement plus petite en habits épiscopaux est en prière à côté du crâne. C’est très probablement le commanditaire du polyptique, Napoleone Orsini, un descendant d’une influente famille de la noblesse. Il a étudié et travaillé dans diverses villes d’Europe et a séjourné à la cour papale d’Avignon en qualité de cardinal. Selon la tradition, Orsini possédait un clou de la Croix qu’il légua à l’église florentine de Santa Maria degli Angeli. Ceci explique sans doute la position prédominante des clous sur La Descente de Croix et la place que tient le commanditaire. Un saint patron priant est représenté sur La Crucifixion. Orsini a probablement été influencé par les idées du pieux franciscain Ubertino de Casale, au service duquel il était. Selon Ubertino, les outils de la Passion comme la lance de Longinus et les clous de la croix sont investis d’une force spirituelle. Il s’agissait à l’origine de deux petits panneaux peints sur les deux faces : Gabriel au dos de De La Crucifixion, et Marie au dos de La Descente de Croix. Ils ont été découpés au milieu pour les présenter sur un mur. On connaît encore deux petits panneaux appartement au polyptique. Il y a à Paris une représentation du Portement de la Croix, avec au dos les armes de la famille, et à Berlin La Mise au tombeau, sur lequel était probablement aussi peint un blason au dos. Les deux petits tableaux servaient de volets aux deux panneaux anversois. Ouvert, le polyptique montrait quatre épisodes successifs de la Passion : le Portement de la Croix, le Coup de lance, la Descente de Croix et la Mise au tombeau. Au dos, L’Annonciation occupait la place centrale, entourée des armes des Orsini. L’ensemble pouvait être fermé et retourné : on voyait alors un diptyque de L’Annonciation. Le petit format et la peinture sur les deux faces suggèrent que le Polyptique Orsini servait à la dévotion privée. Il existe d’autres exemples de ce type de petites œuvres pliables, mais elles sont plutôt rares. Le peintre Simone Martini, un pionnier de la Renaissance italienne, était originaire de Sienne et vécut longtemps à Avignon. Il a signé l’œuvre au bas du cadre. Sur les panneaux anversois sont inscrits les mots ‘PINXIT’ et ‘SYMONE’. Sur Le Portement de la Croix à Paris figurait initialement la mention ‘HOC OPUS’. Ces inscriptions signifient ensemble : ‘Simone [Martini] a peint cette œuvre’. Il y avait probablement une date sur le cadre de La Mise au tombeau mais elle a disparu. Cette pièce manquante du puzzle est à l’origine de différences d’opinions quant à la datation du polyptique. Selon certains, cette œuvre a été peinte lors du séjour de Martini et Orsini à la cour papale d’Avignon, entre 1335 (arrivée de Martini) et 1342 (mort d’Orsini). Selon Pétrarque, Martini a encore fait un portrait d’Orsini à cette occasion. Pour d’autres, le style relève clairement du travail artistique de Martini dans les années 1320-1330. Le Polyptique Orsini se trouvait autrefois en France, où il exerça une grande influence sur les enlumineurs médiévaux comme les frères Van Limburg, qui intégrèrent des motifs du Polyptique Orsini dans leurs illustrations du Portement de la Croix et de la Descente de Croix dans Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. The KMSKA has four panels of the Orsini polyptych. The first two depict the Annunciation, with The angel Gabriel (inv. no. 257) telling the enthroned and astonished Virgin Mary (inv. no. 258) that she will become pregnant. The other two scenes are from the Passion: The Crucifixion (inv. no. 259) and The Descent from the Cross (inv. no. 260). The first one shows Christ on the Cross flanked by two angels. His companions are mourning in the left foreground, and there is a crowd of soldiers with flags on the right. At the back Longinus, who was said to be a blind soldier, is thrusting a lance into Christ’s side. The blood from the wound restores his sight. In the next scene Christ’s dead body is taken down from the Cross. Once again his companions react with an outpouring of emotion. Christ’s blood flows down onto Adam’s skull at the bottom, which according to tradition was buried at the spot where Christ redeemed mankind from Original Sin. The Annunciation and the Passion are linked because they illustrate Christ’s incarnation. Kneeling beside the skull in The Descent from the Cross is a strikingly smaller man in prayer. He is the donor of the polyptych, very probably Napoleone Orsini, scion of an influential aristocratic family who studied and worked in several European cities and was a cardinal at the papal court in Avignon. It was said that he owned a nail from Christ’s Cross, which he bequeathed to the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. That may explain both the prominence of the nails in The Descent from the Cross and the donor’s inclusion in this scene, for donors were usually depicted with The Crucifixion. Orsini was probably influenced by the ideas of the deeply religious Franciscan, Ubertino of Casale, who was in his service. According to Ubertino, the instruments of the Passion, such as Longings’s lance and the nails of Cross, had a spiritual power. Originally these four panels were two panels that were painted on both sides, with Gabriel on the back of The Crucifixion and the Virgin on the back of The Descent from the Cross. They were sawn down crosswise so that they could be hung on a wall. There are two more small panels that belonged to the polyptych. In Paris there is a Carrying of the Cross, with the coat of arms of the Orsini family on the reverse. And in Berlin there is The Entombment, which once probably also had a coat of arms on the reverse. Those two small paintings were the wings of the two Antwerp panels. When the polyptych was opened it therefore displayed four successive moments from the Passion: the Carrying of the Cross, the Lance Thrust, the Descent from the Cross and the Entombment. The central scene on the back was The Annunciation, with the flanking Orsini coats of arms. The ensemble could be closed and turned around to display the diptych with The Annunciation. The small size and double-sided painting suggests that the Orsini polyptych was used for private devotion. There are other examples of small foldable works of this kind, but they were fairly rare. Simone Martini, a pioneer of the Italian Renaissance, came from Siena and lived for a long time in Avignon. He signed the polyptych on the frame at the bottom. The Antwerp panels are inscribed ‘PINXIT’ and ‘SIMONE’, and The Carrying of the Cross originally bore the words ‘HOC OPUS’, so the full inscription meant ‘Simone [Martini] painted this work’. There was probably a date on the frame of The Entombment, but since it is missing there is disagreement about the date of the polyptych. Some believe that it was painted when Martini and Orsini were both at the papal court in Avignon, between 1335 (Martini’s arrival) and 1342 (Orsini’s death). According to Petrarch, Martini then also painted a portrait of Orsini. Other scholars, though, link the style firmly to Martini’s work from the period 1320-1330. The Orsini polyptych was already in France at an early date, and had a great influence on late medieval manuscript illuminators like the Van Limburg brothers.
