Het zijn radicale gebaren die begrepen kunnen worden als de rituele ‘verbranding’ van het eeuwenoude uitgangspunt dat een schildersdoek een plat vlak is waarop ruimte gesuggereerd kan worden door erop te schilderen. In dit Concetto spaziale (Ruimtelijk concept) op een donkerbruin geschilderd doek lopen de vier tagli van boven naar beneden. Niet verticaal, maar licht gebogen volgen zij de snelheid en natuurlijke beweging van de snijdende arm. Deze handeling vergde een moment van opperste concentratie, waarbij de kunstenaar in een vlotte beweging het doek doorsneed met behulp van een stanleymes. Het ritmische en esthetiserende aspect schuilt in de positie en de breedte van de tagli. Zo wordt de evenwijdigheid van de drie kortere sneden – twee smalle en een bredere – extra in de verf gezet door de langste en breedste snede, die lichtjes afbuigt ten opzichte van het trio. ‘Wanneer ik als schilder aan een van mijn geprepareerde doeken werk, wil ik geen schilderij maken, maar ik wil de ruimte openen, een nieuwe dimensie voor de kunst scheppen, het verbinden van de kosmos, zoals die oneindig uitgestrekt ligt achter het platte oppervlak van het beeld.’ Met andere woorden: door de tweedimensionale ruimte van het doek te doorklieven activeerde de kunstenaar de driedimensionale ruimte van de toeschouwer. Hij opende immers door wormgat-achtige openingen (de tagli of buchi) de blik op een onbestemde zwarte ruimte achter het doek. Die ruimte wordt gesuggereerd door zwart gaas dat het invallende licht van de buitenruimte absorbeert, waardoor het licht vooral valt op de bollende of lichtjes rafelende randen van de sneden op het canvas. Plots is ook het canvas duidelijk een driedimensionaal object, een lichaam. De kunstenaar beschouwde dit optische en gevoelsmatige spel met ruimtelijkheid als een evocatie van oneindigheid. Fontana was de geestelijke vader van het spatialisme, een Italiaanse beweging die de ruimtelijke kwaliteiten van zowel de beeldhouwkunst als de schilderkunst onderzocht. Fontana’s Concetti spaziali spreken tot de verbeelding, wat heeft geleid tot een veelvoud aan associaties. Sommigen menen dat hij met zijn werken alludeerde op de historische Space Race tijdens de Koude Oorlog tussen de Verenigde Staten en de voormalige USSR. Anderen verbinden de tagli met de seksuele daad. Nog anderen zien in Fontana een ongelovige Thomas die met zijn vingers in het lichaam van Christus woelt en lichtjes op de huidflappen duwt, waardoor de wonde niet dichtgroeit. Vanuit kunsthistorisch oogpunt is Fontana vooral een belangrijke vertegenwoordiger van de tweede naoorlogse periode in de abstracte kunst (de jaren 1950 en 1960). Zo sluit zijn werk aan bij de monochroom blauwe werken van Yves Klein, die uitnodigen om in de leegte te springen, of bij de Colorfield Paintings van Barnett Newman. Met zijn baanbrekende Manifesto Bianco en Manifesto Spaziale legde hij al eind jaren 1940 mee de basis voor het werk van Piero Manzoni, de Italiaanse arte povera en de internationale ZERO-beweging van Otto Piene en Heinz Macke. In België was er de G58-beweging van abstracte kunstenaars. Kernfiguren daarvan, onder wie Walter Leblanc en Jef Verheyen, waren tijdelijk ook ZERO-kunstenaars en hadden de monochrome schilderkunst gemeen met Fontana. G58 stelde voor het eerst tentoon in 1958 in het Antwerpse Hessenhuis. Fontana kocht er een werk van Verheyen. In 1962 werkte beide kunstenaars samen en perforeerde Fontana tijdens een opname van het tv-programma Medium een van Verheyens doeken op theatrale wijze. Fontana was met andere woorden ook een performancekunstenaar. Ce sont des gestes radicaux qui peuvent être interprétés comme la mise à feu rituel du principe ancestral selon lequel une toile est avant tout une surface sur laquelle l’espace peut être suggéré par la peinture. Dans ce Concetto spaziale (concept spatial) sur toile peintre en marron sombre, les quatre tagli coupent la toile de haut en bas. Pas de manière verticale, mais selon une légère courbe qui trahit la rapidité et le mouvement naturel du bras. Ce traitement exige un moment d’extrême concentration, pendant lequel l’artiste coupe la toile avec un cutter d’un geste vif. L’aspect rythmique et esthétisant réside dans la position et la largeur des tagli. L’harmonie des trois entailles courtes – deux petites et une plus large – est mise en valeur par l’entaille la plus longue et la plus large, qui se courbe légèrement par rapport aux trois autres. "Lorsque je travaille sur une de mes toiles préparées, je ne cherche pas à faire un tableau, mais à ouvrir l’espace, à donner une nouvelle dimension à l’art, à faire le lien avec le cosmos, comme cette ligne infinie derrière la surface plate de l’image." En d’autres mots, en incisant la surface bidimensionnelle de la toile, l’artiste active pour le spectateur un espace tridimensionnel. Ses entailles en forme de vers (les tagli ou les buchi) révèlent au regard un espace noir derrière la toile. Cet espace est suggéré par de la gaze noire qui absorbe la lumière et la fait ressortir sur les bords renflés ou légèrement éraillés des coupures sur le canevas. Soudain, la toile devient clairement un objet tridimensionnel, un corps. L’artiste considérait ce jeu optique avec la spatialité comme une évocation de l’infini. Fontana est le père spirituel du spatialisme, un mouvement italien qui étudie les qualités de l’espace dans la sculpture comme dans la peinture. Les Concetti spaziali de Fontana parlent à l’imagination et suscite une multiplicité d’associations. Certains estiment que ses œuvres font allusion à l’historique course de l’espace entre les États-Unis et l’URSS pendant la Guerre Froide. D’autres associent les tagli à l’acte sexuel. D’autres encore voit en Fontana un Thomas sceptique qui sent le corps du Christ et pousse doucement sur les plaies encore pas cicatrisées. D’un point de vue de l’histoire de l’art, Fontana est une figure importante de l’art abstrait de la période d’après-guerre (les années 1950 et 1960). Son œuvre s’inscrit ainsi dans le courant des œuvres monochromes bleues d’Yves Klein, qui invitent à sauter dans le vide, ou des Colorfield Paintings de Barnett Newman. Avec ses manifestes révolutionnaires Manifesto Bianco et Manifesto Spaziale, il pose dès la fin des années 1940 les bases du travail artistique de Piero Manzoni, de l’arte povera italien et du mouvement international ZERO d’Otto Piene et Heinz Macke. Il y a alors à l’époque en Belgique le mouvement d’art abstrait G58. Les figures centrales, dont Walter Leblanc et Jef Verheyen, sont aussi membres du courant ZERO et ont en commun avec Fontana la peinture monochrome. G58 expose pour la première fois à la Hessenhuis d’Anvers en 1958. Fontana y achète une œuvre de Verheyen. Les deux artistes collaborent en 1962 et Fontana perfore une toile de Verheyens dans un geste théâtral pendant le programme télévisé Medium. Fontana est en d’autres mots un artiste de la performance. The cuts and holes sliced into monochrome canvases by the Argentine-Italian avant-garde artist are among the most iconic and iconoclastic artistic treatments in modern art history. They are radical gestures that can be construed as the ritual ‘incineration’ of the centuries-old dictum that a painter’s canvas is a flat surface on which space can be suggested by applying paint. In this Concetto spaziale (Spatial concept) on a canvas painted dark brown there are four tagli running from top to bottom. They are not vertical but slightly curved, following the speed and natural arc of the cutting arm. It was an action that required the artist’s total concentration, slicing through the canvas with a box cutter. The rhythmic and aestheticising aspects lie in the position and width of the tagli. The parallelism of the three shorter cuts – two narrow ones and a third broader one – is highlighted by the longest and widest cut, which curves slightly away from the trio. ‘When I work as a painter on one of my prepared canvases I do not want to make a painting, I want to open up space, create a new dimension for the art, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture’. In other words, by slashing through the two-dimensional space of canvas, the artist activated the viewer’s three-dimensional space. Through the worm-like openings (the tagli or buchi) he opened up the view of an indeterminate black space behind the canvas. The space is suggested by black gauze that absorbs the light falling in from the outside space, as a result of which the light falls mainly on the bulging or slightly frayed borders of the cuts in the canvas. Suddenly the canvas becomes a three-dimensional object, a body. The artist regarded this optical and instinctive play with spatiality as an evocation of infinity. Fontana was the spiritual father of spatialism, an Italian movement that investigated the spatial qualities of both sculpture and painting. Fontana’s Concetti spaziali appeal to the imagination, which has led to a multiplicity of associations. Some people believe that his work is an allusion to the historical space race during the Cold War between the United States and the former USSR. Others link the tagli to the sexual act. Yet more regards Fontana as a doubting Thomas who roots around with his fingers in Christ’s body, and lightly presses on the flaps of skin, preventing the wound from closing. From the art-historical point of view Fontana is above all an important representative of the second postwar period in abstract art (the years 1950 and 1960). His works thus tie in with the monochrome blue works by Yves Klein, with their invitation to leap into the void, or with the colourfield paintings by Barnett Newman. With his trailblazing Manifesto bianco in the late 1940s he laid the groundwork for Piero Manzoni, the Italian arte povera and the international ZERO movement of Otto Piene and Heinz Macke. In Belgium there was the G58 movement of abstract artists. Key figures there included Walter Leblanc and Jef Verheyen, who for a time were also ZERO artists and shared monochrome painting with Fontana. G58 exhibited for the first time in the Hessenhuis in Antwerp, which is where Fontana bought a work by Verheyen. In 1962 they both worked together, and during a recording for the TV programme Medium Fontana perforated one of Verheyen’s canvases with a theatrical flourish.
