Het nieuwe idealisme was er een van hoop en geloof in een ‘pure’ kunst die de blik op de toekomst richtte. Geïnspireerd op de countdown bij de lancering van een raket was ‘zero’ de ‘onvergelijkbare zone waarin de oude toestand overgaat in de nieuwe’. ZERO promootte een anonieme en nagenoeg wetenschappelijke kunst als reactie tegen de (over)emotionaliteit en gestuele borsteltoetsen van de naoorlogse art informel in Europa en Amerika. Met kernen in Düsseldorf, Milaan, Antwerpen, Parijs en Arnhem werd ZERO een van de meest genetwerkte Europese neo-avant-gardebewegingen. Monochromatisme, seriële structuren en kinematica behoorden tot de belangrijkste nieuwe artistieke methodes om beeldend om te gaan met artistieke thema’s als beweging, ruimte en licht. Na ZERO verwierf Piene faam met zijn Rauchbilder: schilderijen of tekeningen gemaakt met vuur en rook. Zo ontstak hij dunne laagjes brandbare fixatieven op doek of papier. Door de hoeken van de drager vast te nemen manipuleerde hij de richting van de vlammen. Daarna bewerkte hij de zwartgeblakerde vormen en de ruimte eromheen met verf of andere klassieke materialen. Door op een vuurrood geschilderde ondergrond een zwarte rookcirkel rond een wit middelpunt te creëren, wekt Piene met de Grote Zon de fenomenologische perceptie dat het reinigende vuur de weg ruimde voor het heldere witte licht. In de baanbrekende tekst Über die Reinheit des Lichts (Over de zuiverheid van het licht) uit 1958 reflecteerde Piene over dat pure licht als existentiële bron van energie voor het leven, en dus ook voor kunst: ‘Licht is de belangrijkste voorwaarde voor alles wat zichtbaar is. Licht is de kleurencirkel. Licht is de "levenssubstantie" van zowel mens als schilderkunst (…) Door het zuivere licht zal de schilderkunst pure gevoelens kunnen opwekken.’ Vuur is licht. Piene schakelde elk streven naar creatie of schoonheid gelijk met een spelen met vuur, in letterlijke en figuurlijke zin. Creatie en destructie stonden in de ‘rookschilderijen’ dicht bij elkaar, omdat ze altijd een vorm van intensiteit uitlokken, een gevoel van fascinatie en angst dat sterk door het toeval werd bepaald. De handeling van het schilderen en het schilderij als formeel object zijn ondergeschikt aan het ‘in brand steken’ van het canvas en de ervaring van het kunstwerk. In die zin waren de Rauchbilder ook verwant aan de Amerikaanse happenings en de Weense actionisten van de jaren 1960. In 1979-1980 organiseerde het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen de retrospectieve tentoonstelling Zero Internationaal, waarna het museum onder meer deze Grote Zon aan de collectie toevoegde. ZERO plaide pour un art anonyme, presque scientifique en réaction à l’émotivité excessive et la gestuelle picturale de l’art informel qui s’est développé en Europe et en Amérique après la guerre. Avec des foyers à Düsseldorf, Milan, Anvers, Paris et Arnhem, ZERO est un des courants de la néo-avant-garde les plus européens. Le monochromatisme, les structures sérielles et la cinétique constituent les principales méthodes utilisées par ses adeptes pour traduire des concepts artistiques comme le mouvement, l’espace et la lumière. Après ZERO, Piene se fait connaître avec ses Rauchbilder, des tableaux ou dessins réalisés avec du feu et de la fumée. Sa technique consiste à enflammer de fines couches de fixatif sur toile ou papier et à manipuler la direction des flammes en tenant la toile aux quatre coins. Il travaille ensuite les formes noircies et l’espace autour avec de la peinture ou tout autre matériau classique. Le Grand soleil de Piene, un point central blanc entouré d’un cercle de fumée sur fond rouge sang, éveille la perception phénoménologique d’un feu purificateur libérant une lumière plus pure. Dans son texte radical de 1958 Über die Reinheit des Lichts (De la pureté de la lumière), Piene considère la lumière pure comme la source existentielle de l’énergie vitale et donc de l’art : ‘La lumière est la condition majeure pour tout ce qui est visible. La lumière est le cercle de couleurs. La lumière est la ‘substantielle moelle’ de l’homme comme de la peinture (…) C’est par la lumière pure que la peinture peut susciter des sentiments purs.’ Le feu est lumière. Piene voit dans chaque tentative de création ou de beauté une manière de jouer avec le feu, au propre comme au figuré. La création et la destruction se côtoient sur ses ‘peintures fumées’ parce ce que ses toiles provoquent une forme d’intensité, un sentiment de fascination et de crainte qui doit beaucoup au hasard. L’acte de peindre et le tableau comme objet formel sont subordonnés à la ‘mise à feu’ de la toile et à l’expérience immédiate que suscite l’œuvre d’art. Les Rauchbilder de Piene se situent par là dans la mouvance des happenings américains et des actionnistes viennois des années 1960. Le Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers fait l’acquisition de ce Grand soleil à la suite de la rétrospective Zero Internationaal en 1979-1980. After ZERO, Piene found fame with his Rauchbilder: paintings and drawings made with fire and smoke, which involved him setting light to thin layers of inflammable fixatives on canvas or paper. He manipulated the direction of the flames by taking hold of the corners of the support. He then worked the blackened forms and the space around them with paint or other classical materials. By creating a black circle of smoke around a white centre on a surface painted scarlet with Great Sun, Piene evoked the phenomenological perception that the cleansing fire had cleared the way for the bright white light. In his trailblazing text of 1958 titled Über die Reinheit des Lichts (On the purity of light), Piene reflected that pure light was an existential source of energy for life and thus for art as well. ‘Light is the primary condition for all visibility. Light is the sphere of colour. Light is the life-substance both of men and painting....Pure light will enable painting to arouse pure feelings.’ Fire is light. Piene equated every pursuit of creation or beauty with playing with fire, literally and figuratively. Creation and destruction were close to each other in the smoke paintings, because they always elicit a form of intensity, a feeling of fascination and fear that is governed by chance. The act of painting and the painting as a formal object are subordinate to ‘setting fire’ to the canvas and experiencing the work of art. In that sense the Rauchbilder were also related to American happenings and the Viennese Actionists of the 1960s.
