Dat is samengesteld uit bestaande en vooraf door hem bestudeerde landschapselementen. Zo herkennen we de rotsen van het Maasland (de geboortestreek van Patinir), het Brabantse heuvelland, een mistige Italiaanse kustlijn en de Alpen aan de horizon. Italiaanse zee- en berglandschappen waren in onze contreien bekend van de talrijke uitbeeldingen door kunstenaars die over de Alpen waren gereisd. De zones zijn afgebakend door tinten van bruin, groen en blauw. Deze kleurschakeringen, die naar achteren toe vervagen, creëren een atmosferisch perspectief dat diepte suggereert. Het gaat hier om een panoramisch wereldlandschap. De gehele schepping en de natuur worden vanuit een hoog gezichtspunt in al hun diversiteit in beeld gebracht, In het landschap speelt zich een religieus verhaal af dat deels is gebaseerd op het evangelie van Matteüs (hoofdstuk 2) en deels op apocriefe geschriften. Op de voorgrond begeleidt Jozef de ezel waarop Maria met de pasgeboren Jezus zit; ze zijn op de vlucht naar Egypte. Uiterst links valt een afgodsbeeld van zijn voetstuk wanneer Jezus, zoon van de enige God, passeert. Meer op de achtergrond doden soldaten van Herodes de ‘onschuldige kinderen’ en worden ze tijdens hun achtervolging van Jezus misleid. Het wereldlandschap werd in het begin van de 16de eeuw in grote mate gevormd door Joachim Patinir. Het ontwikkelde zich uit de 15de-eeuwse landschapsachtergronden van altaarstukken, heiligenbeelden en portretten, die op hun beurt de gouden achtergronden van de 14de eeuw hadden vervangen. De landschapsschilderkunst groeide in de jaren 1520 uit tot een apart genre, dat zich omstreeks 1600 afsplitste in verschillende types. De kleine tafereeltjes bezorgen het panoramische landschap een verhalend karakter. De betekenis van het Bijbelse thema wordt bovendien door de uitgebreide weergave van het landschap extra benadrukt. Zo ziet Falkenburg (1985) in Patinirs wereldlandschappen allegorieën van de wereld, waarin de mens zich als pelgrim op een Godvriendelijke levensweg voortbeweegt. Hierdoor zijn de landschappen ook betekenisdragers. Het Landschap met de vlucht naar Egypte behoort tot het vroege oeuvre van Patinir. Hij schilderde het omstreeks 1516-1517, maar het is niet zeker dat hij vóór 1515 naar Italië is gereisd. Italiaanse invloeden kunnen hem ook hebben bereikt via het werk van tijdgenoten, zoals Gerard David, Bernard van Orley, Quinten Massijs en Joos van Cleve, met wie Patinir nauwe contacten onderhield. Zijn gedetailleerde, fijne schilderstijl leunt enigszins nog aan bij de gotiek, maar getuigt ook van vernieuwing. Fauna, flora en rotspartijen worden uitvoerig en nauwkeurig uitgewerkt, maar in tegenstelling tot bij de zogenaamde Vlaamse primitieven is het religieuze onderwerp ondergeschikt aan het natuurtafereel en mogen we spreken van een ‘verwereldlijking’ van het godsdienstige thema. Het momenteel gekende oeuvre van Patinir omvat 31 schilderijen, waarvan 19 eigenhandig en gesigneerd zijn, en 22 zijn ontstaan in het atelier (Koch 1968); het gaat voornamelijk om landschappen met religieuze tafereeltjes. Meerdere landschapselementen keren terug in Patinirs werk, zoals de steile rotsformaties, al dan niet in contrast met een stuk geanimeerd platteland met een gezicht op een afgelegen stad of dorp. Deze opbouw vindt men bijvoorbeeld ook in twee andere vroege werken: het Landschap met de brand van Sodom (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) en de Marteldood van de heilige Catharina (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Wenen). Later schilderde hij meerdere voorstellingen van de Rust tijdens de vlucht naar Egypte, waarbij de centrale figurengroep van Maria en Jezus het landschap op de achtergrond meer domineert. Patinir wordt beschouwd als de eerste echte landschapsschilder in de Nederlanden. Albrecht Dürer noemde hem in zijn reisdagboek (1520-1521) ‘der gut landschaft mahler’. In this little panel Joachim Patinir artificially strings together jagged rocks, buildings in a hilly landscape, high mountains and a broad view of the sea to create a bizarre imaginary landscape with a high horizon. It is composed of genuine landscape elements that he had studied beforehand, such as rock formations from the Mosan region (Patinir’s birthplace), the hilly Brabant countryside, a misty Italian coastline, and the Alps on the horizon. Netherlandish painters were familiar with Italian seascapes and mountain landscapes from the countless depictions by artists who had travelled south over the Alps. The separate zones are demarcated by shades of brown, green and blue. That patterning, which becomes fainter as it fades into the distance, creates an atmospheric perspective that creates a sense of recession into depth. In this particular case we have a panoramic world landscape, in which the entirety of creation and nature is depicted in all its diversity from a high vantage point. This landscape is the setting for a religious story that is based partly on St Matthew’s gospel (chaper 2) and partly on apocryphal writings. In the foreground Joseph is leading the ass on which the Virgin Mary is seated with the newborn Jesus. The Holy Family has fled into Egypt. On the far left a heathen idol tumbles from its pedestal when Jesus, the son of the only God, passes by. A little further off, soldiers sent by Herod are killing the ‘innocent children’, while others are being sent the wrong way as they try to pursue Jesus. The genre of the world landscape was largely shaped by Joachim Patinir at the beginning of the 16th century. It evolved from the 15th-century landscape backgrounds of altarpieces, pictures of saints and portraits, which in their turn had replaced the gold backgrounds of the 14th century. Landscape painting became a specialisation in its own right in the 1520s, and around 1600 it began splitting up into different types. The small scenes give the panoramic landscape a narrative character. The meaning of the biblical subject gains added emphasis from the detailed rendering of the landscape. Falkenburg (1985), for instance, regards Patinir’s world landscapes as settings for allegories of the world in which man is a pilgrim progressing along a pathway of life that is devoted to God. That, in its turn, makes the landscapes bearers of meaning. This Landscape with the Flight into Egypt comes from early in Patinir’s career. It was painted around 1516-1517, although it is not certain that he travelled to Italy before 1515. He could also have undergone influences from Italy through the work of contemporaries like Gerard David, Bernard van Orley, Quinten Massijs and Joos van Cleve, with whom Patinir was in close contact. His detailed, delicate style tends a little towards the Gothic, but also has traces of innovation. Fauna, flora and rock formations are extensively and precisely worked up, but unlike the so-called Flemish Primitives the religious subject is subordinated to the natural surroundings, so much so that one can speak of a secularisation of the religious subject. Patinir’s known oeuvre consists of 31 paintings, 19 of them autograph and signed, with 22 from his workshop (Koch 1968). They are mainly landscapes with small religious scenes. Several landscape elements recur in his work, such as the steep rock formations, sometimes contrasted with a stretch of inhabited countryside and a view of a distant town or village. It is a structure found in two other early works, Landscape with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) and The martyrdom of St Catherine (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). He later painted several scenes of The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, in which the central group of the Virgin and Jesus is more pronounced in relation to the landscape. Patinir is regarded as the first true landscape painter in the Netherlands. Albrecht Dürer called him ‘the good landscape painter’ in his travel journal of 1520-1521. Les zones sont délimitées par des teintes de brun, vert et bleu. Ces nuances de couleur, qui s’estompent à l’arrière-plan, créent une perspective atmosphérique qui suggère la profondeur. Il s’agit ici d’un paysage panoramique universel. La Création et la nature sont illustrées dans toute leur diversité et montrées d’un point de vue surplombant. Ce paysage est le décor d’un épisode biblique en partie basé sur l’Évangile de saint Matthieu (chapitre 2), en partie sur des écrits apocryphes. Joseph au premier plan conduit l’âne sur lequel est assise Marie, portant l’Enfant Jésus qui vient de naître. Ils fuient en Égypte. Tout à gauche, une idole tombe de son piédestal au passage du Fils de Dieu. Plus à l’arrière-plan, des soldats d’Hérode tuent ‘les innocents’. Le paysage universel apparaît dans la peinture au début du 16e siècle en grande partie grâce à Joachim Patinir. Il s’est développé au 15e siècle à partir des paysages de fonds de toile des retables, des images de saints et des portraits, qui avaient eux-mêmes remplacé les arrière-plans dorés sur les toiles du 14e siècle. La peinture paysagiste devient dans les années 1520 un genre à part entière qui se ramifie en divers types vers 1600. Les petites scènes qui se déroulent sur la toile donnent un caractère narratif au paysage panoramique. Le sens du thème biblique est de son côté mis en exergue par l’ampleur du décor naturel. Falkenburg (1985) voit ainsi dans les paysages de Patinir des allégories du monde dans lequel l’homme se déplace comme un pèlerin sur le chemin de foi. Les paysages tiennent ainsi partie prenante du narratif. Le Paysage avec la Fuite en Égypte fait partie des œuvres de Patinir. Il le peint vers 1516-1517, mais il n’est pas certain qu’il ait voyagé en Italie avant cette date. Il peut avoir été influencé par la peinture italienne via les œuvres de contemporains comme Gerard David, Bernard van Orley, Quentin Metsijs et Joos van Cleve, avec qui Patinir entretient des contacts étroits. Son style pictural détaillé, raffiné relève d’une part du gothique, mais témoigne aussi d’une recherche de nouveauté. La faune, la flore et les formations rocheuses sont soigneusement élaborées, mais contrairement aux Primitifs Flamands, chez lui le thème religieux est subordonné à la nature et on peut parler d’une forme de ‘sécularisation’ du thème religieux. L’œuvre actuellement connue de Patinir consiste en 31 tableaux, dont 19 de sa main et signés et 22 réalisés dans son atelier (Koch 1968); il s’agit essentiellement de paysages avec des scènes religieuses. Plusieurs éléments naturels reviennent régulièrement sur ses toiles, comme les grandes formations rocheuses, en contraste ou non avec une campagne animée et au loin une ville ou un village. Cette construction se retrouve par exemple dans deux autres de ses premières œuvres : le Paysage avec l’incendie de Sodome (Musée Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) et le Martyre de sainte Catherine (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienne). Il peint ultérieurement plusieurs représentations du Repos pendant la Fuite en Égypte, où le groupe central de Marie et Jésus domine davantage le paysage à l’arrière-plan. Patinir est considéré comme le premier vrai paysagiste de nos contrées.
