Rembrandt Bugatti portretteerde haar ‘naar het leven’ in de Antwerpse Zoo. Het was omwille van de gereputeerde dierentuin dat de Italiaanse beeldhouwer zich in 1907 in de Scheldestad vestigde, tot een jaar voor zijn dood in 1916. De Zoo stond toen aan de top vanwege zijn rijke variatie aan dieren. De haven was een draaischijf voor de Europese import van exotische fauna uit de kolonie Belgisch-Congo. Voor Bugatti was de Zoo zijn atelier en plein air. Er zijn talrijke foto’s van de kunstenaar op deze locatie. In tegenstelling tot de 19de-eeuwse animaliers maakte Bugatti geen geïdealiseerde voorstellingen, maar wilde hij het leven vatten in de materie. Hij creëerde geïndividualiseerde, levendige portretten, waarin hij het karakter van zijn geliefde beesten vastlegde. De jonge kunstenaar observeerde zijn modellen lange tijd voor hij aan het werk ging. Voorbereidende tekeningen maakte hij niet. Snel en intuïtief boetseerde hij – ter plekke – zijn model in klei of plastiline. Een voordeel van het nieuwe plastiline was dat het minder snel hard wordt dan klei en dus langer kneedbaar blijft. Dit eerste stadium zette de bronsgieter vervolgens om in gips. Van de gipsen modellen zijn er vele bewaard, terwijl de weinig duurzame plastilines soms verloren gingen bij het bronsgieten. Bugatti’s bronzen sculpturen werden met de verlorenwastechniek gegoten in het gereputeerde Parijse atelier van Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. Ook Bedelende olifant draagt de stempel van dit huis. De Fonderie Hébrard stond bekend om haar patine. En door de kwaliteitsvolle afwerking zijn ook Bugatti’s vingers in de bronzen huid te zien. Hébrard had reeds in 1904 een contract gesloten met de jonge beeldhouwer. Hij nam Bugatti’s sculpturen af tegen een vaste prijs en organiseerde tot in 1913 jaarlijks een solotentoonstelling van diens werk. Om financiële risico’s te vermijden werden de bronzen meestal pas na bestelling gegoten. Hébrard liet ze doorgaans in meerdere formaten en in een beperkte oplage produceren. Bugatti heeft de Indische olifanten van de Antwerpse Zoo in verschillende posities voorgesteld. Zo bezat KMSKA-mecenas Léonie Osterrieth-Mols in 1909 een exemplaar van Wandelende olifant. Bedelende olifant werd in twee groottes gegoten. Van de grote editie (42,5 x 76 x 37 cm) werd de eerste geut, in een reeks van vijf, in 1908 gekocht door de Antwerpse Zoo (Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde, CR 206). De tweede kwam een jaar later via de 8ste Biënnale van Venetië terecht in de verzameling van de Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome (inv.nr. 1375). Het kleine beeldje in de KMSKA-collectie is als vijfde geut gesigneerd in een reeks van vermoedelijk 18. Volgens Fromanger schonk Bugatti het sculptuurtje zelf aan het museum. De auteur baseert zich hiervoor op de melding ‘donné à Rembrandt Bugatti pour Anvers (5)’ in de productielijst of de Cahier Hébrard (inv.nr. 1606). Maar de beeldhouwer had een andere Antwerpse klant voor ogen. Decoratieve dierensculpturen op klein formaat waren bestemd om de salons van de rijke bourgeoisie te decoreren. In 1908 organiseerde de Antwerpse dierentuin een tentoonstelling met werk van Bugatti. Wellicht werd inventarisnummer 2334 daar gekocht of besteld. Ook de Zoo kocht toen zijn grote versie. Bugatti’s olifantje werd in 1937 door juffrouw Jacqueline Van den Bergh uit Berchem-Antwerpen aan het KMSKA geschonken. Of zij het was die het beeld op de tentoonstelling in de Zoo kocht, staat niet vast. Olifanten zijn wel vaker de publiekslievelingen in dierentuinen. Maar juffrouw Van den Bergh had een bijzondere band met deze olifant: ze heetten allebei Jacqueline. Tout en levant sa patte arrière droite, une femelle éléphant mendie une récompense avec sa trompe. Rembrandt Bugatti fait son portrait ‘sur le vif’ au Zoo d’Anvers. C’est pour le célèbre jardin zoologique que le sculpteur italien s’établit dans la cité scaldienne en 1907 et y vit jusqu’à un an avant sa mort en 1916. Le Zoo est alors considéré comme le plus important du monde pour sa riche variété d’animaux. Le port est la plaque tournante des importations européennes d’animaux sauvages de la colonie du Congo belge. Le zoo est pour Bugatti un atelier en plein air. On trouve d’ailleurs quantité de photos de l’artiste sur le site zoologique. Contrairement aux animaliers du 19e siècle, Bugatti ne réalise pas de sculptures idéalisées car il s’attache à capter la vie dans la matière. Il donne forme à des portraits vivants, individualisés qui lui permettent de saisir le caractère de ses animaux préférés. Le jeune artiste observe longuement ses modèles avant de se mettre au travail. Il ne fait pas de croquis préparatifs. Il modèle l’animal de son choix surplace à l’argile ou la plastiline, de manière rapide et intuitive. La plastiline, un produit nouveau à l’époque, a l’avantage d’être moins dure que l’argile et donc malléable plus longtemps. Après ce premier stade, l’objet est coulé dans le plâtre. Il existe encore quantité de ses modèles en plâtre, tandis que les modèles en plastiline peu durable ont été perdus lors du coulage du bronze. Les bronzes de Bugatti sont coulés dans la technique de la fonte à la cire perdue dans le célèbre atelier parisien d’Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. Éléphant mendiant porte lui aussi la marque de cette maison. La Fonderie Hébrard est alors renommée pour sa patine. Et son travail soigné permet de voir jusqu’à la marque des doigts de Bugatti dans le bronze. Hébrard signe un contrat avec le jeune sculpteur dès 1904. Il achète ses œuvres à un prix fixe et organise chaque année jusqu’en 1913 une exposition solo de l’artiste. Pour éviter les risques financiers, les bronzes sont généralement coulés après la commande. Hébrard les fait produire dans plusieurs formats et en quantité limitée. Bugatti représente les éléphants indiens du Zoo d’Anvers dans diverses positions. La mécène du KMSKA Léonie Osterrieth-Mols possède ainsi en 1909 un exemplaire de l’Eléphant marchant. Éléphant mendiant a été coulé en deux tailles. Le premier coulage de la série de de cinq bronzes en grande taille (42,5 x 76 x 37 cm) est acheté par le Zoo d’Anvers en 1908 (Société Royale de Zoologie, CR 206). Le deuxième entre un an plus tard via la 8e Biennale de Venise dans la collection de la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna de Rome (n° d’inv. 1375). La petite sculpture dans la collection du KMSKA est signée comme cinquième d’une série de probablement 18 bronzes. Selon Fromanger, Bugatti en fait lui-même don au musée. L’auteur se base pour cela sur la mention ‘donné à Rembrandt Bugatti pour Anvers (5)’ dans la liste de production ou Cahier Hébrard (n° d’inv. 1606). Mais le sculpteur avait en vue un autre acheteur anversois. Les sculptures animalières en petit format sont alors destinées à décorer les salons de la riche bourgeoisie. Le jardin zoologique d’Anvers organise en 1908 une exposition consacrée aux œuvres de Bugatti. C’est sans doute à cette occasion qu’est acheté ou commandé le numéro d’inventaire 2334. Le Zoo fait aussi l’acquisition de sa version en grand format. Mademoiselle Jacqueline Van den Bergh de Berchem-Anvers fait don du petit éléphant de Bugatti au KMSKA en 1937. C’est peut-être elle qui achète le bronze à l’exposition au Zoo. Les éléphants sont souvent les favoris du public dans les jardins zoologiques. Mais mademoiselle Van den Bergh a aussi un lien particulier avec cette éléphante : elles s’appellent toutes les deux Jacqueline. As she lifts her front right foot, this female elephant extends her trunk to ask for a reward. Rembrandt Bugatti depicted her ‘from life’ in Antwerp Zoo. It was the zoo that persuaded the Italian sculptor to come and settle in the city in 1907. It was famed for its great variety of animals, and the city’s port was a turntable for European imports of exotic fauna from Belgium’s Congo colony. For Bugatti the zoo was his open-air studio, as can be seen numerous photographs of him there. Unlike 19th-century animal artists, Bugatti did not make idealised scenes. He set out to capture the true life in his material. He created individualised, lively portraits in which he caught the character of his favourite animals. The young artist observed his models for a long time before he set to work. He made no preparatory drawings but modelled the animal on the spot, swiftly and intuitively, in clay or plastiline. One advantage of the brand-new plastiline was that it took longer to harden than clay, so remained mouldable for longer. Bugatti then transformed this first stage into plaster. Many of his plaster models have survived, whereas some of his not very durable plastilines were lost when casting the bronze. Bugatti’s bronze sculptures were cast using the lost wax technique in the famous Paris workshop of Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, and this Elephant begging also bears the mark of that house. The Fonderie Hébrard was celebrated for its patina. And as a result of the high-quality finishing stage the impressions left by Bugatti’s fingers can also be seen in the surface of the bronze. Hébrard had already signed a contract with the young sculptor in 1904. He bought his sculptures for a fixed price, and until 1913 he put on annual exhibitions of his work. So as to avoid taking financial risks, the bronzes were usually only cast after they had been ordered. Hébrard normally produced them in different sizes and limited editions. Bugatti depicted the Indian elephants in Antwerp Zoo in different positions. The KMSKA patroness Léonie Osterrieth-Mols, for instance, had a cast of an Elephant walking in 1909. Elephant begging was cast in two sizes. The first cast in a series of five of the large edition was bought by the Antwerp Zoo in 1908 (Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde, inv. no. CR 206). A year later the second one found its way through the Eighth Venice Biennale to the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome (inv. no. 1375). The statuette in the KMSKA collection is signed as the fifth run in a series that probably consisted of 18. According to Fromanger, Bugatti donated it to the museum himself on the evidence of the statement ‘donné à Rembrandt Bugatti pour Anvers (5)’ in the production list of the Cahier Hébrard (inv. no. 1606). The sculptor, though, had another Antwerp client in mind. Small decorative animals sculptures were designed to adorn the salons of the rich bourgeoisie. In 1908 the Antwerp Zoo organised an exhibition of Bugatti’s work, and this cast may have been bought or ordered there. The zoo also bought his large version. Bugatti’s small elephant was donated to the KMSKA in 1937 by Miss Jacqueline Van den Bergh of Berchem-Antwerp, but it is not known whether she was the one who bought it at the exhibition in the zoo.
