Hij draagt een blauw kleed en een roze mantel, en steunt op een gevorkte staf. Op zijn schouder maakt het Christuskind, met een aureool om zijn hoofd, een zegenend gebaar. Links bevindt zich een rotspartij met in de spelonk een kluizenaar met een lantaarn. Rechts biedt het schilderij uitzicht op een weids kustgezicht in de gloed van de ondergaande zon. Links tussen de rots en Christophorus ligt in de verte een stad. De 13de-eeuwse Legenda aurea vertelt het verhaal van de heidense reus Christophorus, die graag wilde werken voor ‘de machtigste heerser ter wereld’. Hij trad eerst in dienst van een christelijke vorst, maar toen die een kruis sloeg uit vrees voor het kwaad, ging Christophorus voor de duivel werken. Op zijn beurt bleek Satan angst te hebben voor een kruis aan de kant van de weg. Een heremiet zei Christophorus dat hij de opperheer van het kruis kon leren kennen en dienen, en wel door mensen over het diepe water te dragen. Op een nacht verscheen een kind dat overgezet wilde worden, maar dat woog als lood. Met grote moeite en bijgelicht door de lantaarn van de kluizenaar bereikte Christophorus de oever. Behalve het Christuskind had hij ook de zonden van de wereld gedragen die Christus op zijn schouders torste. Christophorus, wat in het Grieks betekent ‘drager van Christus’, was in de late middeleeuwen een populaire heilige en de beschermer van reizigers. Zijn gigantische figuur stond vaak als beeld of schilderij bij de ingang van kerken. Dat kan ook de functie zijn geweest van dit werk. Christophorus werd aangeroepen tegen een schielijke dood, voor mensen die het sacrament van de zieken niet konden ontvangen. Zijn beeltenis was dan ook veelvuldig te zien in verpleeghuizen. Mogelijk heeft ook dit werk toebehoord aan een van de talrijke caritatieve instellingen van de stad Antwerpen, tot aan de ontmanteling in de Franse tijd. Aan Christophorus’ attribuut, de staf, kunnen diverse betekenissen worden toegekend. Zo zou Christus Christophorus hebben bevolen zijn stok in de grond te steken, waarna er jonge takken aan ontsproten. Een boom bovenaan de grot verwijst hiernaar. Massijs’ latere vriend Erasmus verzette zich tegen vormen van bijgeloof zoals die met Christophorus verbonden waren. Friedländer (1971) dateerde het stuk vroeg in het oeuvre van Massijs (omstreeks 1490) vanwege beeldelementen die zijn ontstaan in de werkplaats van Dirk Bouts, die in Massijs’ geboortestad Leuven werkte. Zo wees hij op de gelijkenis met de heilige Christophorus op het rechterluik van Bouts’ zogeheten Parel van Brabant (München, Alte Pinakothek, inv.nr. WAF 76). Silver (1984) volgde hem hierin en zag ook verwantschappen met Christophorusfiguren door de Meester van Katharina van Kleef en Jan van Eyck. De vergelijking van Massijs’ Heilige Christophorus met vroegere voorbeelden toont aan dat zijn werk sterk aan dynamiek heeft gewonnen doordat de heilige reus recht op de toeschouwer toeloopt. Dat creëert een grotere dieptewerking in het schilderij, waardoor de heilige aansluit bij de typologische veranderingen die de dominerende figuur aan het einde van de 15de eeuw doormaakte. Ook de compositie versterkt de dynamiek. Terwijl de heilige Christophorus in de versies van Van Eyck, Bouts en Memling aan weerszijden door een hoge rotspartij wordt geflankeerd, heeft Massijs dat onderdeel aan de rechterzijde vervangen door een lagergelegen lieflijk kustlandschapje. De richting die de compositie hierdoor krijgt – van linksboven naar rechtsonder – wordt extra geaccentueerd door Christophorus’ staf. De vergulde aureool van het Christuskind doet eerder archaïsch aan, maar het fraaie landschap met de gloed van een ondergaande zon is verrassend en nieuw. Het kustgezicht sluit stilistisch nauw aan bij het landschapstype dat Antwerpen in het eerste kwart van de 16de eeuw dominant werd: het wereldlandschap. Massijs heeft zijn interesse voor het landschap ook in andere werken tot uitdrukking gebracht. Bovendien werkte hij samen met de gespecialiseerde Antwerpse landschapsschilder Joachim Patinir, de grondlegger van het wereldlandschap als zelfstandig genre. The 13th-century Legenda aurea tells the story of the heathen giant Christopher, who wanted to work for ‘the most powerful ruler in the world’. He first served a Christian king, but when that king made the sign of the Cross because he was scared of evil, Christopher went to work for the devil instead. Satan, in his turn, showed that he was scared of a cross by the side of the road. A hermit told Christopher that he could get to know the all-mightiest ruler of the Cross, and could serve him by carrying people over the deep water. One night a child appeared who wanted to get to the other side of the river, but weighed as heavy as lead. Christopher managed to get to the other side with great effort and the aid of the hermit’s lantern. He had not only been carrying the Christ Child but also the sins of the world that Christ bore on his shoulders. Christopher, which in Greek means ‘Christ-bearer’, was a popular saint and guardian of travellers in the late Middle Ages. His gigantic figure often stood as a statue or painting at the entrance to a church. That might also have been the function of this work. Christopher’s protection was invoked against sudden death by people who could not receive the Last Sacrament, which is why his image was often seen in infirmaries and hospitals. The painting may also have belonged to one of the many charitable institutions in the city before they were disbanded in the period of the French occupation. Various meanings can be attached to Christopher’s attribute of the staff. For example, Christ commanded him to plant it in the ground, and the next day it bore young shoots. That is referred to in the painting by the tree growing above the cave. Massijs’s later friend Erasmus rejected the forms of superstition of the kind that were attached to Christopher. Friedländer (1971) dated the picture around 1490, early in Massijs’s oeuvre, on the evidence of visual elements that originated in Dirk Bouts’s shop, who worked in Leuven, Massijs’s birthplace. For instance, he drew attention to the resemblance to St Christopher on the right wing of Bouts’s so-called Pearl of Brabant (Munich, Alte Pinakothek, inv. no. WAF 76). Silver (1984) agreed with him, and also saw similarities to figures of the saint by the Master of Catherine of Cleves and Jan van Eyck. The comparison of Massijs’s St Christopher to earlier models demonstrates that the dynamism of his work has gained immeasurably from the fact that the saintly giant is walking straight towards the viewer. That creates a greater sense of recession into depth, as a result of which the saint is consistent with the typological changes that the dominant figure underwent at the end of the 15th century. The composition itself also reinforces the dynamism. Whereas St Christopher has high rocks on both sides in the versions by Van Eyck, Bouts and Memling, Massijs replaced that passage on the right with a charming, low-lying coastal landscape. The direction that that gives the composition, from top left to bottom right, is further accentuated by Christopher’s staff. The Christ Child’s gilded aureole, though, looks archaic, but the beautiful landscape under the glow of the setting sun is surprising and new. The coastal view is closely related in style to the type of landscape that became dominant in Antwerp in the first quarter of the 16th century: the world landscape. Massijs also demonstrated his interest in that type in other works. In addition, he worked with Joachim Patinir, the specialist Antwerp landscapist, the originator of the world landscape as an independent genre. Le tableau offre sur le côté droit une large vue d’un littoral au soleil couchant. On aperçoit au loin une ville entre les rochers et Christophe. La Legenda aurea du treizième siècle raconte l’histoire du païen Christophe qui souhaite travailler pour le prince le plus puissant au monde. Il entre au service d’un roi chrétien, mais lorsque celui-ci se signe par peur du Diable, Christophe va travailler pour le Diable. A son tour, le Satan semble avoir peur d’une croix sur le côté de la route. Un ermite dit à Christophe qu’il peut rencontrer et servir le seigneur de la Croix en transportant les gens sur son dos dans les eaux profondes. Une nuit, un enfant apparaît pour être porté mais il pèse très lourd. Christophe atteint l’autre rive avec beaucoup de difficulté et guidé par la lanterne de l’ermite. Car en plus du Christ, il a porté sur ses épaules tous les péchés du monde. Christophe, le ‘porteur du Christ’ en grec, est un saint médiéval populaire et le patron des voyageurs. Son impressionnante figure est souvent illustrée en statue ou tableau à l’entrée des églises. C’est aussi sa fonction sur ce tableau. La protection de Christophe est appelée contre une mort subite par les personnes qui ne peuvent pas recevoir l’extrême-onction. Son personnage figure donc très souvent dans les hospices. Il est possible que cette œuvre ait appartenu à une des nombreuses institutions caritatives de la ville d’Anvers jusqu’à leur abolition à l’époque française. Diverses significations ont été données à l’attribut de Christophe, le bâton. Le Christ aurait par exemple recommandé à Christophe de planter son bâton dans le sol pour qu’il fleurisse. Un arbre en haut de la grotte en atteste. L’ami de Metsijs rejette les formes de superstition comme celles liées au bâton de Christophe. Friedländer (1971) a daté cette pièce au début de la carrière de Metsijs (vers 1490) s’appuyant sur des éléments picturaux nés dans l’atelier de Dirk Bouts, qui travaillait à Louvain, la ville natale de Metsijs. Il souligne notamment la ressemblance avec le saint Christophe sur le volet droit de la Perle du Brabant de Bouts (Munich, Alte Pinakothek, n° d’inv. WAF 76). Silver (1984) le suit dans cette hypothèse et voit aussi des similitudes avec les figures de Christophe par le Maître de Katharina van Kleef et de Jan van Eyck. La comparaison avec le Saint Christophe de Metsijs avec des exemples antérieurs montre que son œuvre a beaucoup gagné en dynamique avec le saint se dirigeant droit sur le spectateur. Cela crée en effet une profondeur de champ et place le saint dans le courant des changements typologiques que connaît le personnage dominant à la fin du 15e siècle. La composition aussi contribue au caractère dynamique de la toile. Alors que le saint Christophe est flanqué de hauts rochers dans les versions de Van Eyck, Bouts et Memling, Metsijs a opté pour la partie droite du tableau un paysage côtier plus bas. La direction ainsi donnée à la composition – du haut à gauche au bas à droite – est encore accentuée par le bâton de Christophe. L’auréole dorée de l’Enfant Jésus a un aspect plutôt archaïque, mais le délicat paysage au soleil couchant est d’une nouveauté étonnante. La vue du littoral se rapproche par son style du type de paysage dominant au premier quart du 16e siècle. Metsijs manifeste son intérêt pour le paysage dans d’autres œuvres.
