In de jaren vóór de oorlog had Schmalzigaug in Parijs, Venetië en Rome de schilderkunstige vernieuwingen van de internationale avant-garde op de voet gevolgd. Het doek synthetiseert zijn picturale vaardigheden als impressionist, futurist en colorist. Het werd enkele maanden voor zijn vroegtijdige overlijden – Schmalzigaug stapte uit het leven – geëxposeerd op de Tentoonstelling van Belgische Kunst in het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (16 december 1916-16 januari 1917). In Venetië had Schmalzigaug geleerd om de atmosferische kracht en optische vibraties van licht te combineren met de krachtige coloristische dynamiek van het futurisme. Dit tafereel baadt in het licht van de zon die rechtsboven een roterende beweging op gang brengt, een futuristische techniek die de kunstenaar in verschillende composities toepaste. Het licht doorklieft de vormen en creëert een ritme van ‘onwaarschijnlijke coloristische akkoorden’. Het levert een caleidoscopische kijkervaring op. Kenmerkend zijn de scherpe, triangulaire kleurvlakjes – geïnspireerd op de stijl van futurist Gino Severini – en de vrije, pointillistische verftoetsen. Een energiek coloriet en de lichtwerking waren voor Schmalzigaug de belangrijkste ingrediënten van ‘een nieuwe beweging’ in de schilderkunst. In het contemporaine België beschouwde hij enkel het werk van Ensor als een voorbeeld. Schmalzigaug maakte net als Ensor komaf met het genuanceerde kleurgebruik, de ‘delicate tint’. Kleurpigmenten mengde hij zo weinig mogelijk en de verftoetsen en -streken werden naast elkaar geplaatst om een krachtig optisch spel van kleurschakeringen op doek te brengen. In Rome werkte Schmalzigaug in 1914 een tijdlang in het atelier van zijn belangrijkste leermeester, Giacomo Balla. Samen onderzochten zij de sensoriële impact van kleuren op suggesties van beweging, en thematiseerden zij de ervaringen van licht door kleur die zuiver picturaal verschijnt. Deze abstracte tendensen liepen parallel met opvattingen over kleuren die werden geassocieerd met muzikale klanken, ‘de heerschappij van de grote optische polyphonie’. Dergelijke artistieke ambities vloeiden voort uit theosofische inzichten die ook terug te vinden zijn in het multidisciplinaire werk van de futurist Luigi Russolo. In Den Haag deed Schmalzigaug een poging om zijn studie naar kleurgebruik in een manifest te gieten: La Panchromie. Zeg maar: kleur all over. Hij bestudeerde Modern Chromatics. Student’s Textbook of Colour (1879), van de Amerikaanse fysicus Ogden Rood, die parallellen trok tussen optische en akoestische gewaarwordingen en wees op het onderscheid tussen kleurlicht en kleurmaterie. Het heldere gebruik van gekleurde lichtstralen zou een andere visueel effect hebben dan het eerder onzuivere mengen van kleurpigmenten. Schmalzigaug probeerde op doek de waarde van kleurlicht zo veel mogelijk te behouden, door te spelen met het onderscheid tussen zogenaamde licht- en viltkleuren. Deze twee kleurtypes spelen op doek een spel van absorptie en weerkaatsing van licht. Door ze naast elkaar te plaatsen worden optische ritmes van actie en reactie gestimuleerd. Rhythmus van lichtgolvingen: Straat + Zon + Menigte is een illustratief voorbeeld waarin lichtkleuren als oranjerood en geel worden uitgespeeld tegen viltkleuren als olijfgroen, paarsblauw en bruin. La Panchromie was bij het overlijden van de kunstenaar onaf en bleef ongepubliceerd, waardoor het manifest ook geen navolging kreeg. De relatie tussen klanken en kleuren werd tijdens de oorlogsjaren wel verder verkend door de Russische componist Aleksandr Skrjabin, die voor zijn versie van Prometheus in 1915 in de New Yorkse Carnegie Hall een toetsenbord ontwikkelde dat bij elke gespeelde noot een andere kleur licht de ruimte in kon sturen. Een jaar eerder had Schmalzigaug in een brief aan de Italiaanse futurist Boccioni een ideaalbeeld geschetst van een ‘becijferd systeem van gekleurde vibraties (vergelijkbaar met het muzikale notenschrift) [dat] het mogelijk zal maken de lichtsuggestie te "spelen" op een klavier.’ Jules Schmalzigaug a peint cette bouillonnante vue de la rue à La Haye, un lieu d’exil pour les familles et artistes belges pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Les nettes surfaces de couleur triangulaires inspirées du style du futuriste Gino Severini et les touches quasi-pointillistes sont caractéristiques du style de Schmalzigaug. Une palette énergique et le maniement de la lumière sont pour lui les principaux ingrédients d’un ‘mouvement nouveau’ dans la peinture. Ensor est son seul modèle dans le paysage artistique belge. Tout comme le peintre ostendais, Schmalzigaug prend ses distances avec les palettes nuances, la ‘teinte délicate’. Il mélange les pigments aussi peu que possible et juxtapose ses touches et traits de peinture, créant ainsi un puissant jeu d’optique. À Rome, Schmalzigaug travaille un temps en 1914 dans l’atelier de son principal maître, Giacomo Balla. Ils étudient ensemble l’impact sensoriel des couleurs sur la suggestion du mouvement et thématisent les expériences de la lumière à travers la couleur pure. Ces tendances vers l’abstraction vont de pair avec des considérations sur la couleur qui associent les couleurs aux sons musicaux, ce qu’ils appellent le ‘règne de la polyphonie optique’. Rythme de vagues de lumière : Rue + Soleil + Foule illustre parfaitement la manière dont les couleurs pures comme le rouge orangé et le jaune se détachent contre des couleurs feutrées comme le vert olive, le bleu violet et le brun. La Panchromie était inachevé au décès de l’artiste et ne fut donc pas publié, si bien que le manifeste ne fit pas d’émules. La relation entre les sons et les couleurs va néanmoins été approfondie pendant la guerre par le compositeur russe Alexandre Scriabine, qui développe pour sa version de Prométhée en 1915 au Carnegie Hall un clavier permettant à chaque note de déclencher une couleur différente dans l’espace. Un an plus tôt, Schmalzigaug avait décrit dans une lettre au futuriste italien Boccioni l’image idéale d’un "système chiffré de vibrations colorées (comparable à la notation musicale) [qui] permettra de ‘jouer’ la suggestion de la lumière sur un clavier." This canvas synthesises his pictorial skills as an Impressionist, Futurist and colourist. In Venice Schmalzigaug had learned to combine the atmospheric force and optical vibrations of light with the powerful colouristic dynamics of Futurism. This scene is bathed in the light of the sun, which sets up a rotating movement at top right, a Futurist technique that he employed in several compositions. The light cuts through the forms and creates a rhythm of ‘improbable colouristic chords’. It is a kaleidoscopic experience. The characteristic features are the sharp, triangular blocks of colour inspired by the style of the Futurist Gino Severini, and the free, Pointillist brushwork. For Schmalzigaug, an energetic palette and the effect of light were the most important ingredients of ‘a new movement’ in painting. In the Belgium of his day he regarded only Ensor’s work as exemplary. Like Ensor, he made short shrift of a nuanced use of colour, the ‘delicate tint’. He mixed colour pigments as little as possible, and placed dabs and strokes of paint beside each other so as to achieve a powerful optical action of colour patterning. In Rome in 1914 Schmalzigaug worked for some time in the studio of his most important teacher, Giacomo Balla. Together they explored the sensorial impact of colours on suggestions of motion, and thematised the experiences of light through colour that appears purely pictorial. These abstract tendencies ran in parallel with ideas about colours that were associated with musical sounds, ‘the dominion of the great optical polyphony’. Such artistic ambitions flowed from theosophical ideas that can also be found in the multidisciplinary work of the Futurist Luigi Russolo. In The Hague Schmalzigaug tried to distil his study of the use of colour in a manifesto titled La Panchromie. By which he meant: colour all over. He studied Modern chromatics. Student’s textbook of colour of 1879 by the American physicist Ogden Rood, who drew parallels between optical and acoustic perception, and drew attention to the distinction between coloured light and coloured material. The bright use of coloured rays of light supposedly had a different visual effect from the earlier impure mixing of colour pigments. Schmalzigaug tried to retain the value of coloured light on canvas as far as possible by playing with the distinction between so-called light and felt colours. Those two kinds of colour on canvas set up an interpaly of absorption and reflection of light. Placing them beside each other stimulates optical rhythms of action and reaction. Rhythm of light waves. Street + sun + crowd is an illustrative example in which light colours like orange-red and yellow are set against felt colours like olive green, purple-blue and brown. La Panchromie was left unfinished when the painter died, so no one picked up on the ideas it contained. The relationship between sounds and colours was explored further during the war years by the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin, who developed a keyboard for his version of Prometheus in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1915. It could send out a different colour of light for every note played.
