Centraal voorin hangt de gestorven Christus aan het kruis. Aan de voet daarvan huilen zijn naasten hevig. De figuren in dit tafereel zijn merkelijk groter dan de andere kerkgangers. De kleinere personages in de zijbeuken en voor het hoofdaltaar behoren tot de tweede voorstelling. Zij beelden de zeven sacramenten uit, de rituele pijlers van het christelijke geloof. Van links naar rechts zien we: het doopsel, het vormsel, de biecht, de eucharistie, het huwelijk, de priesterwijding en de ziekenzalving. Deze kerk is een microkosmos waarin verschillende lagen en standen uit de bevolking samenkomen, zowel rijkelijk uitgedoste burgers als de bedelaars rechts op het middenpaneel. In de voorstelling van de zeven sacramenten komen ook alle leeftijden aan bod. De engelen duiden de relatie tussen de twee voorstellingen. Zij dragen banderollen met Latijnse parafrases van kerkelijke geschriften die elk sacrament in verband brengen met de dood van Christus (zie de inscripties). Bij de eucharistie, die alleen op het middenpaneel afgebeeld wordt, is dit het meest voor de hand liggend: de mis is een herdenking van het Laatste Avondmaal, dat voorafging aan de kruisdood. Tijdens de eucharistie verandert de gezegende hostie in het lichaam van Christus. Rogier van der Weyden behoort tot Vlaamse Primitieven, een groep schilders uit de Bourgondische Nederlanden die in Europa grote faam verwierf. Hij stond bekend om het weergeven van emoties. De mensen aan de voet van Christus’ kruis zijn hiervan een treffend voorbeeld: tranen rollen over hun gezichten en Maria stuikt in elkaar van verdriet. Door het bloed van Christus in de verf te zetten – het druipt uit de wonden in zijn handen, hoofd en zij – lokte Van der Weyden ook een emotionele reactie uit bij de toeschouwer. Het drieluik werd besteld door Jean Chevrot (ca. 1395-1460), bisschop van Doornik en voorzitter van de Bourgondische Raad onder Filips de Goede en Isabella van Portugal. De opdracht is niet gedocumenteerd, maar de wapenschilden van Chevrot en Doornik werden op de drie panelen aangebracht, respectievelijk in de linker- en de rechterbovenhoek. Dendrochronologisch onderzoek wijst uit dat de triptiek na 1440 geschilderd werd. Kunsthistorici dateren het werk op stilistische basis rond 1440-1445. Het is niet duidelijk voor welke kerk Chevrot het altaarstuk heeft besteld. Zijn huiskapel in de kathedraal van Doornik is de voor de hand liggende keuze. Tenzij de triptiek diende ter decoratie van een kapel in de Sint-Hippolytekerk in Poligny, Chevrots geboortestad, waar een cultus bestond rond een wonderbaarlijke hostie. Opdrachtgever Chevrot liet zichzelf afbeelden als de bisschop die het vormsel toedient. De technische opbouw van het werk suggereert dat ook andere personages in de kerk gebaseerd zijn op historische figuren. Sommige gezichten werden namelijk geschilderd op een velletje tin dat later op het houten paneel werd bevestigd. Van der Weyden portretteerde deze mensen waarschijnlijk op locatie, waarna hij hun beeltenis in zijn atelier in het grote schilderij integreerde. De overige portretten zijn nog niet overtuigend geïdentificeerd. Van der Weyden stond aan het hoofd van een atelier met assistenten die hem bijstonden. Ook dit Sacramentsaltaar is het resultaat van samenwerking, al nam Van der Weyden een groot deel voor zijn rekening. In 2006-2009 werd het werk gerestaureerd, waarbij een vergeelde vernislaag werd verwijderd en de originele verflaag in ere werd hersteld. Na de ingreep kwamen experts tot de conclusie dat Van der Weyden instond voor het hele middenluik en dat hij de architectuur en sommige figuren op de zijluiken heeft uitbesteed aan twee medewerkers. Le peintre peint à l’intérieur d’une église gothique deux scènes liées entre elles. Nous sommes face au maître-autel. Le Christ mort sur la Croix est au centre. Ses proches en pleurs sont prosternés à ses pieds. Les personnages de ce tableau sont clairement plus grands que les autres fidèles. Les petits personnages dans les nefs latérales et devant le maître-autel appartiennent à la deuxième représentation. Ils illustrent les sept sacrements, les piliers des rituels du Catholicisme. On voit de gauche à droite le baptême, la confirmation, la contrition, l’eucharistie, le mariage, l’ordination d’un prêtre et l’extrême-onction. Cette église est un microcosme réunissant diverses couches de la population, des bourgeois richement vêtus aux mendiants à droite sur le panneau central, ainsi que tous les âges. Les anges font le lien entre les deux représentations. Ils portent des banderoles de paraphrases latines des Écritures qui mettent chaque sacrement en relation avec la mort du Christ (voir les inscriptions). Le message le plus clair est celui de l’eucharistie, uniquement illustrée sur le panneau central : l’office religieux commémore la Dernière Cène avant la Crucifixion. L’hostie bénie se transforme dans le corps du Christ pendant l’eucharistie. Rogier van der Weyden fait partie des Primitifs Flamands, un groupe de peintres des Pays-Bas bourguignons renommés dans toute l’Europe. Van de Weyden est réputé pour son talent à traduire les émotions. Les figures aux pieds de la Croix en sont un exemple édifiant : les larmes ruissellent sur le visage des hommes et Marie est effondrée de douleur. Van der Weyden provoque aussi une réaction émotionnelle chez le spectateur en mettant en exergue le sang du Christ qui coule de ses mains, de sa tête et de son flanc. Le triptyque a été commandé par Jean Chevrot (vers 1395-1460), évêque de Tournai et président du Conseil de Bourgogne sous Philippe le Bon et Isabelle du Portugal. La commande n’est pas documentée, mais les blasons de Chevrot et de Tournai figurent sur les trois panneaux, respectivement dans le coin supérieur gauche et droit. L’étude dendrochronologique a révélé que le triptyque a été peint après 1440. Les historiens de l’art le situent sur base stylistique vers 1440-1445. Il n’est pas clair pour quelle église Chevrot a commandé le retable. Sa chapelle privée à la cathédrale de Tournai semble le choix évident. A moins que le triptyque ait servi à décorer une chapelle de l’église Saint-Hyppolyte de Poligny, la ville natale de Chevrot, où il existait un culte de l’hostie miraculeuse. Le commanditaire Chevrot se fait représenter en évêque officiant la confirmation. La construction technique de l’œuvre suggère que d’autres personnages dans l’église sont basés sur des figures historiques. Certains visages ont en effet été peints sur une feuille d’étain avant d’être fixés sur le panneau en bois. Van der Weyden a probablement fait leur portrait sur place avant de le reproduire en atelier sur le retable. Les autres portraits ne peuvent pas être clairement identifiés. Van der Weyden dirige un atelier et s’entoure d’assistants. Cet Autel des Sacrements est le produit d’une telle collaboration, même si Van der Weyden en a réalisé la plus grande partie. L’œuvre a été restaurée en 2006-2009 ; une couche de vernis jauni a été retirée, ce qui a permis de mettre au jour la couche de peinture originale. Après ces travaux, les experts sont arrivés à la conclusion que Van der Weyden a pris à son compte tout le volet central et qu’il a confié à deux assistants l’architecture et certains personnages. The painter executed two related scenes in the interior of a Gothic church, looking towards the high altar. The dead Christ hangs from the Cross in the centre, at the foot of which his followers are lamenting bitterly. The figures in this scene are considerably larger than the other people in the church. The smaller figures in the aisles and in front of the high altar are playing parts in the second scene, which illustrates the seven sacraments, the ritual pillars of the Christian faith. Reading from left to right they are Baptism, Confirmation, Confession, Communion, Matrimony, Holy Orders and Extreme Unction. This church is a microcosm bringing together different strata and ranks of society, both richly dressed citizens and the beggars depicted on the right in the centre panel. They are all of different ages. The angels explain the relationship, between the two scenes. They are carrying banderoles inscribed with Latin paraphrases of ecclesiastical writings that associate each sacrament with the death of Christ (see Inscriptions above). That connection is the most logical with the Eucharist, which is only depicted on the centre panel, for the Mass is the commemoration of the Last Supper that preceded Christ’s death on the Cross. It is during the Eucharist that the consecrated host is transformed into the body of Christ. Rogier van der Weyden is one of the Flemish Primitives, the name of a group of painters in the Burgundian Netherlands who became famous throughout Europe. They are particularly noted for their depiction of emotions. The people at the foot of the Cross here are prime examples of this, for they have tears rolling down their cheeks, and the Virgin has swooned in sorrow. By painting Christ’s blood dripping from the wounds in his hands, head and side, Van der Weyden is also prompting an emotional reaction from the viewer. The triptych was commissioned by Jean Chevrot (c. 1395-1460), Bishop of Doornik and president of the Great Council of Burgundy under Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal. The commission is not documented, but the coats of arms of Chevrot and Doornik are in the top left and right corners of the three panels respectively. Dendrochronological analysis indicates that the triptych was painted after 1440, while art historians date it around 1440-1445 on stylistic grounds. It is not clear which church Chevrot chose for the altarpiece. His private chapel in Doornik Cathedral would have been the obvious choice. Unless, that is, the triptych was to be used to decorate a chapel in the Church of St Hippolytus in Poligny, Chevrot’s birthplace, where there was a cult around a miraculous host. Chevrot had himself depicted as the bishop carrying out the confirmation ceremony. The technical structure of the work suggests that other people in the church are also based on historical figures, for some of the faces were painted on a pewter sheet that was later attached to the wooden panel. Van der Weyden probably painted those people on location, after which their likenesses were integrated in the large painting back in his workshop. The other portraits have not yet been convincingly identified. Van der Weyden was at the head of a workshop with assistants to help him. This Seven sacraments altarpiece is also a collaborative work, although Van der Weyden did carry out much of the work himself. The painting was conserved in 2006-2009, when a yellowed layer of vanish was removed and the paint layer was restored to its original condition.
