Ze zijn opgebouwd met bronzen en koperen platen, zoals de bladzijden van een boek. Elke laag is afzonderlijk gegoten en op diverse wijzen bewerkt met inkepingen, uitstulpingen en gaten, die een oneffen oppervlak creëren. De combinatie van geverniste, gepolijste en onbewerkte delen zorgt voor levendige kleurschakeringen en verhoogt de expressiekracht van het materiaal. Door de frontale presentatie lijkt het ondiepe beeld een reliëf. Pietro Consagra stelt met dit abstracte beeld een colloquio of gesprek voor, een gedachtewisseling. Die bestaat volgens hem uit verschillende componenten: 20% weten waarover je het wil hebben, 20% inzicht in dat waartoe je wil komen, 20% waarin je niet naar je gesprekspartner luistert, 20% tegenspraak, 15% misverstand en 5% onvoorziene factoren [Apollonio, p. 19]. Volgens de beeldhouwer vertrek je bij een gedachte van een verzameling herinneringen. De tijd kneedt je denkwijze. Gesprek met de tijd lijkt een frontale projectie van een boeiende samenspraak, of een innerlijke dialoog met de tijd, met gelaagdheden en botsende ideeën. Het belangrijkste kenmerk van de Colloqui – Consagra maakte er vanaf 1952 een hele reeks van – is dat ze haast tweedimensionaal zijn, en frontaal gericht. Het gebrek aan ruimtelijkheid wordt opgevangen door de vermenigvuldiging van de lagen, de uitpuilende vormen en de lichtinval. Door de frontale opstelling ontstaat er een confrontatie, een ‘tête-à-tête’, een spirituele dialoog met de toeschouwer. Ondanks het non-figuratieve karakter evoceert Consagra met dit werk relaties en confrontaties tussen mensen en tussen de mens en zijn omgeving. De Italiaanse beeldhouwer maakte deel uit van de naoorlogse avant-garde. Zijn abstracte kunst is doordrongen van links-radicale en revolutionaire ideeën. De avant-garde vond figuratieve kunst en het concept ‘realisme’ steriel en academisch, niet geschikt voor een sociaal vooruitstrevende maatschappij. Deze kunstenaars legden de nadruk op de vorm in de kunst, maar een inhoudsloos, louter decoratief formalisme keurden ze af. Consagra wilde de problemen van zijn tijd in een plastische vorm uitdrukken. Een ontwerp voor Gesprek met de tijd maakt deel uit van een reeks tekeningen die Consagra opnam in zijn boek La città frontale uit 1969, met als bijschrift: ‘Città come argomento delle emozioni umane’ (‘Stad als grond van menselijke emoties’). In het boek verzamelde de Siciliaan zijn projecten en theorieën omtrent de bouw van een ideale en humane stad. In 1970 werd hem gevraagd mee te werken aan de heropbouw van de Siciliaanse stad Gibellina, die in 1968 door een aardbeving van de kaart was geveegd. Pietro Consagra nam tussen 1954 en 1956 elfmaal deel aan de Biënnale van Venetië, was ook in Kassel en stelde in die periode tentoon in het Guggenheim Museum in New York. Tussen 1953 en 1973 was de internationaal gevierde kunstenaar meermaals deel te gast op de biënnales van het Middelheimmuseum. Walther Vanbeselaere – toen directeur van het KMSKA – merkte de sculptuur Gesprek met de tijd op in Consagra’s solotentoonstelling in het Brusselse Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in 1958. Hij kocht het werk aan voor een museumzaal die aan de avant-gardekunst zou worden gewijd. Colloquio col Tempo ou Dialogue avec le temps est un assemblage de trois tablettes verticales de formes différentes. Elles sont composées de plaques de cuivre comme les pages d’un livre. Chaque couche a été coulée séparément et est travaillée de diverses manières avec des entailles, des saillies et des trous qui forment une surface inégale. La combinaison d’éléments vernis, polis et bruts produit de riches nuances de couleurs et rehausse la force d’expression du matériel. La présentation frontale donne à cette sculpture plate l’aspect d’un relief. Pietro Consagra représente avec cette sculpture abstraite un colloquio, un échange de vues. Les ingrédients du dialogue se décomposent selon lui ainsi : savoir ce dont vous voulez parler (20%), savoir où vous voulez arriver (20%), ne pas écouter son interlocuteur (20%), contradiction (20%), incompréhension (15%) et facteurs imprévisibles (5%) [Apollonio, p. 19]. Pour le sculpteur, nos idées s’appuient sur une collection de souvenirs. Le temps modèle notre pensée. Dialogue avec le temps ressemble à la projection frontale d’un passionnant dialogue, un dialogue intérieur avec le temps chargé de strates et d’idées contradictoires. Les Colloqui de Consagra – il en fait toute une série à partir de 1952 – se caractérisent par leur aspect bidimensionnel et leur présentation frontale. Le manque de spatialité est compensé par la multiplication des couches, les formes saillantes et le jeu de lumière. La présentation frontale suggère une confrontation, un tête-à-tête, un dialogue spirituel avec le spectateur. En dépit du caractère non-figuratif de cette œuvre, Consagra parvient à évoquer des relations et confrontations entre les hommes et entre l’homme et son environnement. Le sculpteur italien appartient à l’avant-garde d’après-guerre. Son art abstrait est imprégné d’idées de gauche radicales et révolutionnaires. L’avant-garde considère l’art figuratif et le concept de réalisme stériles et académiques, inadaptés à une société basée sur le progrès social. Ces artistes mettent l’accent sur la forme, tout en rejetant le formalisme purement décoratif, creux et dénué de message. Consagra aspire à exprimer les problèmes de son époque à travers son art. Une esquisse du Colloquio col Tempo figure dans la série de dessins que Consagra reprend dans son ouvrage de 1969 La città frontale, avec pour légende : ‘Città come argomento delle emozioni umane’ (‘La ville, creuset des émotions humaines’). Le Sicilien réunit dans ce livre ses projets et théories sur la construction d’une ville idéale et humaine. En 1970, il est sollicité pour participer à la reconstruction de la ville sicilienne Gibellina, rayée de la carte par un tremblement de terre en 1968. Pietro Consagra participe onze fois à la Biennale de Venise entre 1954 et 1956, est également présent à Kassel et expose au Musée Guggenheim de New York. C’est un artiste de renommée internationale et il est invité à plusieurs reprises aux biennales du Musée Middelheim entre 1953 et 1973. Walther Vanbeselaere – alors directeur du KMSKA – remarque la sculpture Colloquio col Tempo à l’exposition que le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles consacre à Consagra en 1958 et l’achète pour une salle monumentale dédiée à l’avant-garde artistique. Each layer was cast separately and worked in various ways with notches, bulges and holes to create an irregular surface. The combination of varnished, polished and plain elements creates a lively interplay of colours and heightens the expressive power of the material. The frontal presentation gives the shallow sculpture the look of a relief. With this abstract sculpture Pietro Consagra is setting up a colloquio or conversation, an exchange of ideas. According to him it consists of different components: 20% knowing what you want to talk about, 20% understanding what your goal is, 20% not listening to the person you’re talking to, 20% contradiction, 15% misunderstanding, and 5% unforeseen factors [Apollonio, p. 19]. Colloquio col Tempo looks like the frontal projection of a fascinating conversation, or an inner dialogue with time, with stratification and colliding ideas. The most important feature of the Colloqui, of which Consagra has made a whole series since 1952, is that they are almost two-dimensional and face the front. The lack of three dimensions is counterbalanced by the multiplication of the layers, the bulging shapes and the fall of light. The frontal arrangement creates a confrontation, a tête-à-tête, a spiritual dialogue with the viewer. Despite its non-figurative nature, this work evokes relationships and confrontations between people and between man and his surroundings. The Italian sculptor is part of the postwar avant-garde. His abstract art is permeated with radical left-wing and revolutionary ideas. The avant-garde regarded figurative art and the concept of ‘realism,’ as sterile and academic, unsuited for a socially progressive society. They placed the accent on the form in art, but rejected a content-free, purely decorative formalism. Consagra wanted to express the problems of his day in a plastic form. A design for Colloquio col Tempo is part of a series of drawings that Consagra included in his book La città frontale of 1969, with the caption: ‘Città come argomento delle emozioni umane’ (‘City as ground for human emotions’). In the book the Sicilian collected together his projects and theories about the construction of an ideal and humane city.
