In de catalogus vinden we haar onder nummer 532 als Diane, statuette ivoire. Eén jaar later prijkte de statuette met de titel Diane chasseresse - Diana jageres op de kleine Antwerpse Salon, waar het museum ze aankocht. Josuë Dupon, die toen al een reputatie had opgebouwd als animalier of dierenbeeldhouwer én die de techniek van het ivoorsnijden beheerste, koos voor een motief uit de Grieks-Romeinse mythologie. Diana, in het Grieks Artemis, is de maagdelijke jachtgodin en de strenge en atletische verpersoonlijking van de kuisheid. De kunstenaar laat een frisse wind waaien door het antieke idioom: hij verbeeldt de godin als een elegant vrouwelijk naakt, zo sierlijk als een ornament. Dupon pakt zijn heldin in volle actie: met het lichaam gespannen in een opwaartse beweging en met de boog nog in de lucht lijkt Diana de afgeschoten pijl met haar ogen te volgen. Ze staat op de schedel van een eland, tussen het brede, opstaande gewei, met haar pijlenkoker binnen handbereik. Het maansikkeltje op de diadeem is sinds de oudheid haar attribuut als maangodin. (Sinds de jaren 1980 is Diana’s haarsieraad spoorloos.) Voor de uitvoering werkte Dupon met de meest precieuze materialen: ivoor in combinatie met brons, verguld messing en edelstenen. Het beeld staat op een kostbare sokkel van onyx, die op een bronzen voetstuk rust. Het Diana-motief wordt voortgezet op het voetstuk, in vier kleine reliëfs die elk een aspect van de veelzijdige godheid belichten: Diana rustend met een hert, na het bad, liggend met de maansikkel en met een monster. Diana is een staaltje van chryselefantiene beeldhouwkunst, een kunsttak die in België op het einde van de 19de eeuw topstukken voortbracht. De term chryselefantien is afgeleid van de Oudgriekse woorden chrusos en elephantinos, wat respectievelijk ‘gouden’ en ‘ivoren’ betekent. Dupon was niet aan zijn proefstuk toe. Op de wereldtentoonstelling van 1894 in Antwerpen bracht hij al werk met ivoorsnijkunst. Hij behoorde tot het selecte clubje beeldhouwers die koning Leopold II en staatssecretaris Edmond Van Eetvelde aanmoedigden om te werken met olifantstanden uit de Onafhankelijke Congo-Staat. Diana was een gegeerd kunstobject en Dupon vervaardigde meerdere exemplaren. Een identieke tweede versie was te zien op de grote internationale tentoonstelling van 1897 in Brussel, meer bepaald op de koloniale (sub)tentoonstelling in Tervuren die georganiseerd was tot meerdere eer en glorie van Leopold II en zijn kroondomein. In de prestigieuze eresalon, waar het summum van de Belgische chryselefantiene beeldhouwkunst werd getoond, pronkte Dupons Diana in een uitbundig versierde vitrinekast. Haar huidige bewaarplaats is onbekend, maar in 1967 was ze nog in het bezit van de juffrouwen Dupon, de twee dochters van de kunstenaar. Na de dood van de laatste dochter werd ze in 1986 te koop aangeboden. Een derde versie wordt bewaard in het Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Josuë Dupon, qui s’est alors forgé une réputation de sculpteur animalier et qui maîtrise la taille de l’ivoire, a opté pour un motif de la mythologie gréco-romaine. Diane, ou Artémis pour les Grecs, est la déesse de la chasse et une personnification puissante et athlétique de la virginité. L’artiste fait souffler un vent nouveau sur l’idiome antique en représentant la déesse en femme nue aussi décorative qu’un ornement. Dupon saisit son héroïne en pleine action. Le corps tendu dans un mouvement ascendant et l’arc encore dressé, Diane semble suivre des yeux la flèche qu’elle décoche. Elle se tient entre les bois dressés d’un éland, son carquois à portée de main. Le croissant de lune sur son diadème est depuis l’Antiquité son attribut de déesse de la lune. (Le bijou a disparu depuis les années 1980.) Dupon réalise sa sculpture dans les matériaux les plus précieux: ivoire combiné au bronze, laiton doré et pierres fines. La déesse se tient sur un précieux socle d’onyx, qui repose sur un pied en bronze. Le motif de Diane est repris sur le pied en quatre petits reliefs illustrant chacun une facette du personnage　: Diane se reposant avec un cerf, après le bain, allongée avec le croissant de lune et un monstre. Diane est un modèle du chryséléphantin, une discipline artistique qui produit des pièces maîtresses en Belgique à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle. Le terme chryséléphantin vient des mots chrusos et elephantinos en grec ancien, qui signifient respectivement ‘doré’ et ‘ivoire’. Dupon n’en est pas à sa pièce d’essai. Il a déjà présenté des œuvres taillées dans l’ivoire à l’Exposition universelle de 1894 à Anvers. Il appartient au cercle très fermé des sculpteurs que le roi Léopold II et le Secrétaire d’État Edmond Van Eetvelde encouragent à travailler les défenses d’éléphants ramenées de l’État indépendant du Congo. Diane est un objet d’art recherché et Dupon en réalise plusieurs exemplaires. Une deuxième version identique est montrée à la grande exposition internationale de 1897 à Bruxelles, plus précisément à la sous-exposition coloniale de Tervuren organisée en l’honneur et à la gloire de Léopold II et de son domaine royal. La Diane de Dupon trône dans une vitrine extravagante du prestigieux salon d’honneur où sont exposées les plus belles sculptures en technique du chryséléphantin. On ignore où elle se trouve aujourd’hui, mais elle était en encore en 1967 dans la possession des demoiselles Dupon, les deux filles de l’artiste. Elle fut mise en vente à la mort de la dernière fille, en 1986. Une troisième version est conservée au Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya de Barcelone. Dupon made his statuette with the most precious materials: ivory combined with bronze, gilt brass and precious stones. It stands on a costly base of onyx resting supported by a bronze pedestal. The subject of Diana is illuminated further on the pedestal, where four small reliefs illustrate aspects of the versatile goddess: resting with a deer, after bathing, reclining with the crescent moon, and with a monster. Diana is a superb specimen of chryselephantine sculpture, a branch of art that produced several masterpieces at the end of the 19th century. The term comes from the classical Greek words chrusos and elephantinos, meaning ‘golden’ and ‘ivory’ respectively. This work was not a try-out for Dupon. He had already exhibited ivories at the World’s Fair in 1894. He belonged to a select group of sculptors who were encouraged by King Leopold II and Secretary of State Edmond Van Eetvelde to work with elephant tusks from the Congo Free State. Diana became a sought-after work of art, and Dupon made several versions of her. An identical second one was shown at the major international exhibition of 1897 in Brussels, in the colonial section organised in Tervuren to the greater honour and glory of Leopold II and his crown domains. In the prestigious Salon of Honour, where the finest works of Belgian chryselephantine sculpture were on display, Dupon’s Diana reigned supreme in an exuberantly decorated display cabinet. Her present whereabouts are unknown, but in 1967 she still belonged to the Misses Dupon, the artists’ two daughters. After the death of the last surviving one he statuette was offered for sale in 1986.
