Die verbroken echtelijke band is niet alleen jammer om emotionele redenen. Pas wanneer men de portretten naast elkaar plaatst, zien we hoe meesterlijk Frans Hals de liefdevolle band tussen man en vrouw in beeld heeft gebracht. Op het ontbrekende schilderij, dat zich in de Rotschild verzameling bevindt, reikt Isabella haar man met de rechterhand een roos aan. Op het doek in Antwerpen heeft Stephanus net een handschoen uitgetrokken om dat symbool van haar affectie aan te nemen. In het portrettenpaar wisselt het stel een intense blik uit en verschijnt op hun gezichten een glimlach. Steven Gérard, of Stephanus Geraerdts, werd geboren in Amsterdam en stierf in Haarlem in 1671. Toen hij op 4 oktober 1644 met Isabella huwde, woonde hij aan de chique Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Later werd hij raadslid en schepen in Haarlem. De uit Haarlem afkomstige Isabella stierf op 7 oktober 1689. Haar familie behoorde tot de upper class van de Republiek. Grootvader van moederskant was achtereenvolgens ambassadeur in Engeland, Denemarken en Venetië. Haar vader was heer van Bruchen en Nieuwwaal, en haar ooms Balthasar en Johannes Coymans waren de rijkste bankiers van Amsterdam. Stephanus en Isabella woonden aan de Koningstraat 18 in Haarlem. De portretten lijken geen huwelijksportretten te zijn, want stilistisch behoren ze tot een rijpere fase in Hals’ oeuvre. Ze worden doorgaans omstreeks 1650-52 gedateerd. Hij portretteerde wel meer leden van de familie Coymans, onder wie Isabella’s ouders, Joseph Coymans en Dorothea Berck (Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut en Baltimore Museum of Art). Hals’ dandyachtige portret van Willem Coenraetsz. Coymans, de zoon van een verre neef van Joseph, wordt bewaard in de National Gallery of Art te Washington. The sundering of that marital bond is not only a pity for emotional reasons, for it is only when one places the two portraits side by side that one sees how masterfully Frans Hals depicted the loving relationship between man and wife. In the missing painting, which is now in the Rothschild Collection, Isabella is handing her husband a rose with her right hand. In the Antwerp canvas Stephanus has just taken off his right glove to receive that symbol of her affection. They are exchanging an intense gaze as they smile at each other. Steven Gérard, or Stephanus Geraerdts, was born in Amsterdam and died in Haarlem in 1671. When he married Isabella on 4 October 1644, he was living on fashionable Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. They are usually dated around 1650-1652. Hals’s dandy-like portrait of Willem Coenraetsz Coymans, the son of a distant cousin of Joseph, is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The painting of Stephanus Geraerdts and his wife mark a high point in the artist’s oeuvre. Stephanus’s richly embroidered clothing, cuff and glove is rendered with the daring straight brushstrokes that are so typical of Hals.
