Mogelijk is dit een fragment van een paneel waarop meerdere koppen stonden afgebeeld. Een latere hand vervolledigde de onregelmatige vorm tot een staande rechthoek en schilderde er kledij en een donkere achtergrond bij. Niet de identiteit van het model was voor Van Dyck belangrijk, wel de pose en de speling van het licht op zijn gelaat en nekspieren. De penseelvoering is doeltreffend en getuigt van een scherp observatievermogen. Transparante verflagen wisselen elkaar af met opake partijen en met accenten die het licht weerkaatsen. Een verfrommelde witte kraag vormt het slotakkoord van deze sonate in grijzen, okers en bruinen. Van Dyck maakte de studie omstreeks 1618–1620, ter voorbereiding van een schilderij. Hij werkte toen als jonge kunstenaar in het atelier van Peter Paul Rubens. De tronie vormde het vertrekpunt voor de knielende figuur die Christus een rietstengel als staf aanbiedt, rechts onderaan op het schilderij Doornenkroning (Madrid, Museo del Prado, inv.nr. P001474) en op nog een tweede Doornenkroning (voorheen Berlijn, Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, inv.nr. 770, vernietigd tijdens WO II). Het personage op groot formaat is halfnaakt en draagt een hoofdband. Een anatomische krijtstudie van deze figuur wordt bewaard in Rotterdam (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, inv.nr. MB 341 (PK)). Enkele andere tronies die in de kunsthandel circuleren zijn oefeningen van Van Dyck voor de hoofden van de overige personages op deze twee doeken. Dans le triangle central de ce petit panneau, Van Dyck a peint la tête d’un vieillard émacié de profil perdu, c’est-à-dire à moitié de dos. Il pourrait s’agir d’un fragment d’un panneau sur lequel étaient peintes plusieurs têtes. La forme irrégulière a été parachevée à une date postérieure pour prendre une forme plus rectangulaire et on y a ajouté des habits et un fond sombre. Ce n’est pas tant l’identité du modèle qui intéresse ici Van Dyck, mais la pose et le jeu de lumière sur le visage et les muscles du cou. Le trait de pinceau est assuré et témoigne d’un sens aigu de l’observation. Les couches de peinture transparentes alternent avec des parties opaques et des accents qui renvoient la lumière. Un col blanc fripé complète cette harmonie de gris, d’ocres et de bruns. Van Dyck réalise cette étude préparatoire à un tableau en 1618-1620. Il travaille alors comme jeune artiste dans l’atelier de Pierre Paul Rubens. Le visage va servir de base au personnage agenouillé qui tend au Christ une tige de jonc en guise de sceptre, en bas à droite du tableau Le Couronnement d’épines (Madrid, Museo del Prado, n° d’inv. P001474) et sur un deuxième Couronnement d’épines (autrefois à Berlin, Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, n° d’inv. 770, détruit pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale). Le personnage en grand format est à moitié nu et porte un turban. Une étude anatomique à la craie de cette figure est conservée à Rotterdam (Musée Boijmans Van Beuningen, n° d’inv. MB 341 (PK)). Quelques autres ‘trognes’ circulant sur le marché de l’art sont des études de Van Dyck pour les autres personnages sur ces deux tableaux. On the central triangular core piece of this panel Van Dyck painted the head of a thin old man in lost profile, viewed halfway from behind in other words. This may be a fragment of a panel that originally had several heads. A later artist turned its irregular shape into a vertical rectangle and added clothing and a dark background. The model’s identity was of no interest to Van Dyck, but the pose and the action of light on his face and neck muscles were. The brushwork is efficient and displays a keen power of observation. Transparent paint layers alternate with opaque passages and with accents that reflect the light. A rumpled white collar provides the closing chord to this sonata in greys, ochres and browns. Van Dyck made the study around 1618-1620 in preparation for a painting. He was working at the time as a young artist in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. This study head was the point of departure for the kneeling figure offering Christ a reed as a staff at bottom right of the Crowning of Thorns (Madrid, Museo del Prado, inv. no. P001474) and in a second painting of the same subject (formerly Berlin, Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, inv. no. 770, destroyed in the Second World War). The scaled-up figure is half naked and is wearing a headband. There is an anatomical chalk study of the figure in Rotterdam (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, inv. no. MB 341 (PK)).
