Ze is gekleed als een koningin, met een hermelijnen mantel en een kroon versierd met parels en edelstenen. Maria is omringd door twee soorten engelen, volgens de invloedrijke christelijke denker Pseudo-Dionysius de voornaamste hemelse wezens. De rode serafijnen waren de hoogste in rang. Ze zijn het talrijkst en staan het dichtst bij Maria, met hun handen op haar troon. De blauwe cherubijnen stonden op de tweede plaats in de hemelse hiërarchie. Zij bidden op de achtergrond. Het schilderij is het rechterpaneel van een tweeluik waarvan de andere helft zich in Berlijn bevindt. Daarop staan de opdrachtgever, Etienne Chevalier, en zijn patroonheilige, de heilige Stefanus, in een renaissancegebouw. Chevalier bidt terwijl Stefanus zijn hand op zijn rug legt. De twee panelen verwijzen naar elkaar: Chevalier richt zijn gebed naar het rechterluik en Christus wijst naar het linkerluik. Mogelijk reflecteert in de twee bollen links op Maria’s troon een raam van het gebouw op het linkse paneel. Het originele tweeluik werd in 1661 gedetailleerd beschreven. Rond beide panelen zat een blauwe lijst versierd met borduursels en medaillons in email. Slechts één medaillon is bewaard: hij toont een zelfportret van Jean Fouquet (Louvre, inv.nr. OA 56). De twee lijsten waren aan elkaar bevestigd met scharnieren, wat betekent dat de diptiek gesloten kon worden. In gesloten toestand was de waarschijnlijk beschilderde achterkant van het Berlijnse paneel te zien. Deze voorstelling is spoorloos, omdat de drager op een onbekend moment doormidden is gezaagd. De oorspronkelijke vorm suggereert dat de diptiek diende als altaarstuk. Dit strookt met het gegeven dat het schilderij hing in de Notre-Damekerk in Melun, waar opdrachtgever Chevalier een kapel had. Etienne Chevalier was de schatkistbewaarder van Karel VII van Frankrijk. Documenten over de opdracht zijn niet bewaard, maar een dendrochronologische en stilistische analyse suggereert dat het werk rond 1450 besteld werd bij Jean Fouquet, toentertijd Frankrijks belangrijkste kunstenaar en een uitzonderlijke schilder en miniaturist. Fouquet ontwierp de voorstelling van Madonna met serafijnen en cherubijnen waarschijnlijk niet voor Chevalier, maar voor Karel VII. Op röntgenopnames van zijn Portret van Karel VII, dat vóór het Antwerpse paneel geschilderd werd, is namelijk al een versie van de Madonna te zien. Het is niet duidelijk waarom Fouquet uiteindelijk besloot een portret van de koning over dit tafereel heen te schilderen. Er wordt verondersteld dat Chevalier na het zien van deze eerdere versie een herhaling bestelde. Een oude traditie wil dat de Madonnafiguur gebaseerd is op Agnes Sorel (1422-1450), een maîtresse van Karel VII die om haar schoonheid werd geroemd. Waarschijnlijk klopt deze overlevering. Fouquets Madonna lijkt op Sorels grafportret in Loches, de enige bewaard gebleven 15de-eeuwse afbeelding van haar. Bovendien lijkt ook Maria’s kledij aan Sorel te refereren. Normaal werd de Madonna afgebeeld in een gewaad, maar hier draagt ze een jurk met ontblote schouders. Sorel introduceerde dit type aan het Franse hof. Haar innovatieve en onthullende kledij trok de aandacht van zowel tegenstanders als bewonderaars. Men achtte het lang onverenigbaar dat Sorel de rol van Maria kreeg in een altaar voor Chevalier. Toch is dit niet noodzakelijk problematisch. Mogelijk bracht Chevalier met het werk een hommage aan Karel VII of aan Sorel zelf. Sorel en Chevalier waren geen onbekenden: hij was de executeur van haar testament. De Madonna omringd door serafijnen en cherubijnen is een van dé iconische werken van het KMSKA. De spierwitte Madonna en Christus, in combinatie met de roodblauwe kleuren van de engelen, bezorgen het schilderij een surreëel en tijdloos effect. Toch was het niet altijd geliefd. Dat blijkt onder andere uit de beslissing van de kerk van Melun om het werk te verkopen (1775). Toen Florent van Ertborn het enkele decennia later aankocht, raadde een bevriende specialist hem aan het in een donkere hoek te hangen. Nadat Van Ertborn het paneel in 1841 aan het museum had gelegateerd, werd er aanvankelijk amper over geschreven. Pas sinds de vroege 20ste eeuw groeide Fouquets Madonna uit tot een gelauwerd meesterwerk. La Vierge sur son trône porte l’Enfant Jésus sur ses genoux. Elle est habillée comme une reine, avec un manteau d’hermine et une couronne sertie de perles et de pierres précieuses. Elle est entourée de deux sortes d’anges, les principaux êtres célestes selon l’éminent penseur chrétien Pseudo-Dionysius. Les séraphins roses occupent le rang supérieur. Ils sont les plus nombreux et sont les plus proches de la Vierge, avec leurs mains sur sa couronne. Les chérubins bleus sont au deuxième rang dans la hiérarchie céleste. Ils prient à l’arrière-plan. Ce tableau est le panneau droit d’un diptyque dont l’autre moitié se trouve à Berlin. Y figurent le commanditaire Etienne Chevalier et son saint patron, saint Stéphane, dans un édifice de style Renaissance. Chevalier est en prière pendant que Stéphane pose sa main sur son dos. Les deux panneaux sont liés : Chevalier adresse ses prières au panneau droit et le Christ montre du doigt le panneau gauche. On peut distinguer la fenêtre d’un bâtiment du panneau gauche en reflet dans les deux boules à la gauche du trône de la Vierge. Le diptyque original est décrit en détail en 1661. Les deux panneaux sont entourés d’un cadre bleu décoré de dentelles et de médaillons en émail. Un seul médaillon a été préservé : il montre un autoportrait de Jean Fouquet (Louvre, n° d’inv. OA 56). Les deux cadres sont fixés ensemble par des charnières, ce qui signifie que le diptyque pouvait être replié. Fermée, la pièce montrait probablement le dos du panneau berlinois. Cette représentation a été perdue, parce que le support a été coupé en deux à un certain moment. La forme originelle suggère que le diptyque servait de retable, contrairement à ce que laisse à penser le fait que le tableau était accroché dans l’église Notre-Dame de Melun, où le commanditaire Chevalier avait une chapelle. Etienne Chevalier était le trésorier du roi de France Charles VII. Les documents relatifs à la commande ont perdu, mais une analyse dendrochronologique et stylistique suggère que l’œuvre a été commandée vers 1450 à Jean Fouquet, alors le principal artiste français et un peintre et miniaturiste d’exception. Fouquet ne conçut probablement pas sa Vierge aux séraphins et chérubins pour Chevalier, mais pour Charles VII. Des radios de son Portrait de Charles VII, antérieur au panneau anversois, ont en effet révélé une version de la Vierge. On ignore pourquoi Fouquet a finalement décidé de recouvrir ce panneau d’un portrait du roi. On suppose que Chevalier ayant vu cette première version en commanda une réplique. Une tradition ancienne veut que le personnage de la Madone soit basé sur Agnès Sorel (1422-1450), une maîtresse de Charles VII renommée pour sa beauté. L’assertion est sans doute exacte. La Madone de Fouquet ressemble effectivement au portrait mortuaire de Sorel à Loches, la seule représentation du 15e siècle de cette femme connue. Les habits de Marie semblent également faire référence à Agnès Sorel. La Vierge était normalement représentée dans une robe drapée, alors qu’elle porte ici une robe aux épaules dénudées, un style introduit à la Cour de France par Agnès Sorel. Ses tenues nouvelles et osées attiraient autant l’attention de ses réfracteurs que de ses admirateurs. On a longtemps considéré inconcevable que Sorel tienne le rôle de la Vierge sur un autel pour Chevalier. Ce n’est pourtant pas incompatible. Avec cette œuvre, Chevalier rend hommage à Charles Karel VII ou à Agnès Sorel elle-même. Sorel et Chevalier se connaissaient bien car il était son exécuteur testamentaire. La Vierge entourée de séraphins et de chérubins est une des œuvres emblématiques du KMSKA. Le blanc laiteux de la Madone et du Christ, les couleurs rouge et bleu des anges confèrent au panneau un effet surréel, intemporel. L’œuvre n’a pas toujours fait l’unanimité à en juger par une décision de l’église de Melun de la vendre (1775). Lorsque Florent van Ertborn l’achète quelques décennies plus tard, un ami spécialiste lui conseille de l’accrocher dans un coin sombre. L’œuvre n’a pratiquement fait l’objet d’écrits quand Van Ertborn lègue le panneau au musée en 1841. Ce n’est que depuis le début du 20e siècle que la Madone de Fouquet est considérée comme un chef d’œuvre incontesté. The enthroned Madonna holds the Christ Child on her knee. She is robed as a queen, with an ermine cloak and a crown decorated with pearls and precious stones. She is surrounded by the two kinds of angel whom the influential Christian thinker Pseudo-Dionysius classified as the most important creatures in heaven. The red seraphim were the highest in rank. They are the most numerous and stand closest to the Madonna, touching her throne. The blue cherubim came second in the heavenly hierarchy, and are praying in the background. The painting is the right-hand panel from a diptych, the other half of which is in Berlin. It shows Etienne Chevalier, who commissioned the work, and his patron saint, St Stephen, in a Renaissance building. Chevalier is praying while Stephen lays his hand on his back. The two panels refer to each other, with Chevalier directing his prayer to the right-hand panel, and the Christ Child pointing towards the left-hand panel. A window in the building in the left panel may be reflected in the two globes on the left of the Madonna’s throne. The original diptych was described in detail in 1661. Each panel had a blue frame decorated with embroidery and enamel medallions. Only one medallion has survived, and shows a self-portrait of Jean Fouquet (Louvre, inv. no. OA 56). The two frames were attached to each other with hinges, meaning that the diptych could be closed to display the painted back of the Berlin panel. That scene has been lost without trace, because at some stage the support was sawn down crosswise. The original form suggests that the painting served as an altarpiece. That fits with the fact that the painting hung in the Church of Notre Dame in Melun, where Chevalier had a chapel. Etienne Chevalier was the treasurer to Charles VII of France. There are no documents relating to the commission, but dendrochronological and stylistic analysis suggest that the work was ordered around 1450 from Jean Fouquet, France’s leading artist at the time and an exceptional painter and miniaturist. Fouquet probably did not design this scene for Chevalier but for Charles VII. X-radiographs of his Portrait of Charles VII, which predates the Antwerp panel, reveal an earlier version of the Madonna. It is not clear why Fouquet eventually chose to paint a portrait of the king over that work, but it is assumed that Chevalier ordered a repetition after seeing the earlier version. An old tradition has it that the figure of the Madonna is based on Agnes Sorel (1422-1450), a mistress of Charles VII who was renowned for her beauty. That tradition is probably true, since Fouquet’s Madonna resembles Sorel’s tomb portrait in Loches, which is the only surviving 15th-century depiction of her. The Madonna’s attire also appears to be a reference to Sorel. She was usually depicted in a gown, but here she is wearing a dress with bared shoulders, which is a type of garment that Sorel introduced at the French court. He innovative and revealing clothing caught the eye of both critics and admirers. For a long time it was considered incompatible for Sorel to have been given the part of the Virgin in an altarpiece for Chevalier. That, though, is not necessarily problematic. Chevalier may have been paying homage to Charles VII with this work, or to Sorel herself. They were no strangers to each other, for he was the executor of her will. Madonna surrounded by seraphim and cherubim is one of the iconic works of the KMSKA. The snow-white Madonna and Child, combined with the red and blue colours of the angels, give the picture a surreal and timeless quality. But it was not always popular. That is shown, among other things, by the Melun church’s decision to sell the work in 1775. When Florent van Ertborn bought it a few decades later, a specialist friend of his advised him to hang it in a dark corner. Barely anything was written about the panel in the early years after Van Ertborn bequeathed it to the museum in 1841.
