Hij transformeerde traditionele artistieke gebaren in een vorm van manuele en fysieke arbeid. Daarom hamerde, nagelde en beitelde hij eerder dan dat hij schilderde. In 1957 introduceerde Uecker zowel een op maat gemaakte nagel als het monotone inslaan van die nagels als zijn belangrijkste handelsmerk. ‘De nagel is in essentie een verlenging die ik in de hand houd.’ Als de nagel voor Uecker het penseel was, dan was de hamer het schilderspalet. Hij sloeg zijn nagels in traditionele dragers als doeken en panelen, maar ook in tafels, tv-toestellen, platenspelers en piano’s. Ueckers ‘nagelvelden’ komen voor in de vorm van geometrische constructies, spiralen en vrije structuren. Door vanuit het centrum snel en ritmisch duizenden nagels in verschillende standrichtingen en patronen in een vierkant paneel te slaan, transformeerde Uecker in dit Donker veld het tweedimensionale oppervlak van het ‘schilderij’ in een ruimtelijk object. Het kunstwerk treedt buiten zijn werkelijkheid en gaat in interactie met de ruimte waarin de toeschouwer zich bevindt. Die wordt, naargelang van zijn eigen positie en beweging, optisch een fluctuerend spel van licht en beweging gewaar, van schijnbaar wiegende spijkerkopjes. De illusie van beweging wordt versterkt door het maximale contrast tussen de zwarte ondergrond en het ritmische spel van lichtweerkaatsingen op de stalen nagels, die elk hun schaduw werpen. ‘De manier waarop ik nagels gebruik als structurerend element,’ aldus de kunstenaar, ‘toont dat ze niet als nagels moeten worden verstaan.’ Nagels voelen en ogen als scherpe en harde objecten die men als dreigend kan ervaren. Zo kan een nagel een symbool zijn van geweld; denk aan de kruisiging van Christus. De spijkervelden van Uecker zetten deze gewoonlijke ervaring op losse schroeven. Zijn nagels gaan visueel op in een uiterst zacht en glooiend veld. Ze worden schijnbaar soepel en zacht, als korenhalmen in de wind. Het gevoel van dreiging, maar ook de suggestie van harde fysieke arbeid met dagelijkse objecten en werktuigen verandert in een poëtische en esthetische ervaring van schoonheid en oneindigheid. De kunst van Uecker maakt iets moois van het dagelijkse leven. Uecker exposeerde zijn eerste ‘nagelobjecten’ op de tentoonstelling Motion in Vision – Vision in Motion in het Antwerpse Hessenhuis, het ‘hoofdkwartier’ van de G58-beweging. Het was de eerste buitenlandse tentoonstelling van de van oorsprong Duitse ZERO-beweging rond Otto Piene en Heinz Mack. Uecker sloot zich daar officieel bij aan vanaf 1961. Deze progressieve kunstenaars deelden hun naoorlogse geloof in een maatschappelijk en artistiek nulpunt, met eindeloze nieuwe mogelijkheden als gevolg. Zij kwamen los van de traditionele manier van schilderen – met verf op doek – en vonden elkaar in een ruimere exploratie van thema’s als licht, ruimte en beweging. In 1979-1980 volgde bij wijze van terugblik op deze historische connectie in Antwerpen de retrospectieve tentoonstelling Zero Internationaal, waarna het museum deze achromatische spijkerstructuur van Uecker aankocht. A partir des années 1950, Uecker dépouille les objets d’art de leur ‘naïveté et romantisme’. Il transforme l’acte artistique traditionnel en une sorte de travail manuel et physique. Il martèle, cloue et burine plutôt qu’il peint. Les clous faits sur mesure et enfoncés de manière monotone deviennent en 1957 sa marque de fabrique. “Le clou est en essence un prolongement de ma main.” Si pour Uecker, le clou est le pinceau, le marteau est la palette du peintre. Il enfonce ses clous dans des supports traditionnels comme les toiles et les panneaux, mais aussi dans les tables, les postes de télévision, les tourne-disques et les pianos. Les ‘champs de clous’ de Uecker se présentent sous la forme de constructions géométriques, de spirales et de figures libres. En couvrant de manière rapide et rythmique un panneau carré de milliers de clous en partant du centre dans divers sens et motifs, Uecker transforme dans ce Champ obscur la surface plane du ‘tableau’ en un objet tridimensionnel. L’œuvre sort de sa réalité et entre en interaction avec l’espace. En se déplaçant, le spectateur provoque un jeu optique de lumière et de mouvement et les clous semblent onduler. L’illusion du mouvement est renforcée par le contraste optimal entre le fond de toile noir et le jeu rythmique des reflets lumineux sur les clous en acier et leur ombre. “La manière dont j’utilise les clous comme élément structurant,” explique l’artiste, “montre qu’ils ne doivent pas perçus comme des clous.” Les clous sont considérés comme des objets durs et pointus et peuvent être perçus comme une menace. Un clou peut ainsi être un symbole de violence quand on songe à la Crucifixion. Le champ de clous d’Uecker ne provoque pas cette association d’images car il ressemble plutôt à l’étendue douce et souple d’épis de blé ondoyant au vent. La sensation de menace, mais aussi la suggestion d’un travail physique éprouvant auxquelles on associe de tels objets se transforment en une expérience poétique et esthétique. Uecker fait du quotidien un objet de beauté intemporelle. Uecker montre ses premiers ‘objets à clous’ à l’exposition Motion in Vision – Vision in Motion à la Hessenhuis d’Anvers, quartier général du mouvement artistique G58. C’est la première exposition à l’étranger du mouvement allemand ZERO autour d’Otto Piene et Heinz Mack. Uecker rejoint officiellement ce courant artistique en 1961. Ces artistes progressistes partagent une vision d’un point zéro de la société et de l’art au lendemain de la guerre et y voient une infinité de possibilités. Ils veulent faire table rase de la peinture traditionnelle et se retrouvent dans une exploration plus large de thèmes comme la lumière, l’espace et le mouvement. La rétrospective Zero Internationaal de 1979-1980 revient sur cette connexion anversoise. C’est à cette occasion que le musée fait l’acquisition de cette structure de clous achromatique d’Uecker. In 1957 he introduced both a made-to-measure nail and a monotonous hammering of those nails as his main trademark. ‘In essence, the nail is an extension that I hold in my hand’. If Uecker’s nail was the brush then the hammer was the painter’s palette. He hammered his nails into traditional supports like canvases and panels, but also into tables, televisions, record players and pianos. Uecker’s nail fields take the form of geometrical constructions, spirals and free structures. By hammering thousands of nails swiftly and rhythmically at different angles and patterns from the centre of a square panel, he transformed the two-dimensional surface of ’the painting’ into a spatial object in this Dark field. The work of art transcends its reality and enters into an interaction with the space in which viewers find themselves. They then observe a fluctuating interplay of light and motion of seemingly swaying nailheads, depending on their own position and motion. The illusion of motion is reinforced by the maximum contrast between the black ground and the rhythmic dance of light reflections off the steel nails, each of which casts its own shadow. ‘The way that I use nails as structuring elements demonstrates that they should not be understood as nails.’ Nails feel and look like hard objects that can be experienced as menacing. A nail can be a symbol of violence, for example. One only has to think of the Crucifixion. Uecker’s nail fields call that customary experience into question. His nails are swallowed up visually into an extremely soft and sloping field. They appear to become supple and soft, like cornstalks in the wind. The feeling of menace, but also the suggestion of hard physical labour with everyday objects and tools is transformed into a poetic and aesthetic experience of beauty and boundlessness. Uecker’s art makes something beautiful out of daily life. Uecker presented his first ‘nail objects’ at the exhibition Motion in vision – Vision in motion in the Hessenhuis in Antwerp, the ‘headquarters’, of the G58 movement. That was the first foreign exhibition of the originally German ZERO movement around Otto Piene en Heinz Mack. Uecker officially joined it in 1961. Those progressive artists shared their post-war belief in a social and artistic zero point, with endlessly new opportunities as a consequence. They freed themselves from the traditional manner of painting with paint on canvas, and found each other in a wider exploration of such subjects as light, space and motion.
